My goodness. Either I'm being wound up or there's word blindness on here today. I said:

I wrote it as people appear to hear it.

Understand now?!?!

No, not really because I can't imagine any way to get an "a" and two "s's" into any possible pronunciation of Jeff/Geoff.

Can't you just say what they echo back to you? .... Is it "Jase", like Jason without the "...on"?

Let me try simpler words. I say "G for golf" and they hear "J". I say "F for freddie" and they hear "S". Geoff is pronounced exactly the same as Jeff.

Ah! .... If I use the phonetic alphabet, which I do occasionally, I usually stick to the NATO standard Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo, Foxtrot, .....

Yes, but 'G' is (or should be) pronounced with a very definite "ee" sound at the end.

Er, exactly!

So that begs the question: What accent does Geoff have?

Alien, according to my wife. (Essex specifically, though not as, um, coarse as many)

I suppose if your given name is too much trouble for the average American then you could choose any other names you have.
Growing up in UK we all went by our last names in and out of school, teachers and pupils never used your given name. So I'm used to doing that.

It's still perilously close to jay though, as jay ends with an eee sound too if you hold it - it's the first part that really differentiates. Hence me trying to use words or the phonetic alphabet which still doesn't seem to work.

Thankfully they don't seem to be doing that anymore...

And I guess if you were Mexican or Spanish, you might suffer a bit if you were in the UK and you had the name Julio, Juanita, Juan....

I say my name, and when they repeat it it is something else that I do not recognize. I have taken to using a pseudonym in restaurants.
