You might feel others are overly optimistic about the UK, it might also be said you are overly pessimistic. It seems there may be no meeting in the middle of the parties concerned, so you might want to rethink your posts in the MBTTUK forum, and be mindful of where you posted

I'm not taking any sides and saying that either party is right or wrong, but ask that people don't stoop to name calling and personal attacks. It adds nothing to the discussion.

Thanks

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 2

Only the most brave-hearted, optimistic and enthusiastic supporters on the road could claim that South Africa’s tour is not suffering at the back-end of two months on the road. Much was made, understandably, of the potential impact the ‘new faces’ would make during the ODI section of the tour – and even more for the T20 section at the end – but the reality is different.

New passengers on a train running out of fuel do not provide impetus to the engine. It is what it is…running on low. Not quite empty, but the red light is flashing. Gary Kirsten has had the luxury of his wife, Deborah, and their three children visiting for a couple of trips during the tour but hotel life is never easy for anyone, never mind with three kids under the age of 10.

Talking of kids, the English youth ‘culture’ caught up with me in a big way this evening on the Underground. Living nearby to a circular line offers the perfect opportunity for delinquent parents to offer their considerably more delinquent children the opportunity to go and ‘play’ somewhere ‘safe’. And return after however many loops they fancy doing before turning in for the night.

The point is, I lived in South Africa for eight years, and any journalist from this country should think twice about writing more than likely made up negative stories about any other country. South Africa has more than its fair share of crime and appalling immigration control. Try visiting Hillbrow in Johannesburg for example.

Any decent sporting journalist worth his or her salt would keep all of the propaganda rubbish out of a sporting article. Oh, maybe I forgot, sensationalism sells newspapers?

John, the point is that certain individuals on here make the uk out to be a virtual utopia which is not.
I also lived in SA and yes the crime rate is far higher but there is not the issue in SA with white trash that you get in the UK. If you read the article there is nothing to suggest that these were in fact immigrants, but more likely locals. Again, I am not dismissing the terrible levels of crime in SA (which is one of the reasons I left), but your average white person in SA is far more civilized than the equivalent in the uk

I think this is a major, largely unrecognised problem facing many Western economies - knowledge and technical skills are the primary basis of our economies (not labour or natural resources), but countries like India, China and Korea are outstripping us globally in terms of progress in education levels.

What do they expect? As we have set ourselves up as a nation of call centres, is it clear what all of these hopefully highly educated school leavers are going to do? Mrs T thought she could create a nation of bankers and turn all of these mine workers, engineering workers, and textile workers into network administrators overnight. Go around some of the still depressed areas of South Yorkshire and the Midlands if you don't believe me. Now, as an engineer myself, I can see they are scrambling to get the industry back but it may be a case of too little, too late.

As has been said this is a problem facing most Western nations, it might be too late to reverse but who knows really.
