Senators can arrange for an American Flag to be flown over the United States Capitol. Flags can be flown in honor of someone or in recognition of a special occasion. a lot of people have it done for citizenship then the flag is sent to them
the cost are reasonable enough
here is one senators page on this... they all do it ..

My wife decided to put a pirate flag I had laying around in front of our house, it matches our skull and cross bones door mat that says "Keep out" but we do live around a few religious nuts who probably think we're devil worshipers now.

When we visited Pearl Harbor last year, we discovered that the gift shop sells flags that have been flown at the Arizona Memorial... so that's what we fly at home now.

I did one for DH's natz; he is still so pleased over it. (Congressmen can do this for you also). We're negotiating a flag pole now. I am voting for making the dead-eucalyptus-that-isn't-actually-dead into the flagpole.
radion, see how you feel once you get here; every community is a little bit different about it. It's not a cultural requirement where we live, but it might well be in Florida.

My wife made me drive to Elmers as our US flag was torn and she needed a new one to fly on the 4th. Paid twice as much as the same flag would have been in Freddies but found a Grand Union Flag to fly as well.
On Battle of Britain day (September 15th) I fly the Royal Air Force Ensign, that makes the neighbors look twice. One day they might even ask what it is.

and what is wrong with one of those. The Brits supported the Confederacy against those dam Yankees and their war of northern aggression.

hmm, might have to see about getting him the Royal Navy one to round out the collection.
PS: on the first read I wondered what kind of flag you were getting at the pancake shop, then I figured it out

we have a fair few of them in town. No love lost by me on that one.
In fact we have a Veteran's Park Memorial garden in town that you can buy a brick in a veteran's memory and get it inscribed. Was thinking of getting one for gr gr grandfather Stephen H Yates Vermont Volunteer Light Artillery Battery.

On the evening of Friday 13th October 1307, an order was issued by the Pope to have all members of the Knights Templars across Europe arrested for heresy. The order was given by the Pope under pressure from King Phillip of France to act against the Templars. The King owed the Templars a fortune for financing his wars with the English. What better way of losing a debt is there than removing people you owe the debt to?
On that night all across Europe the Templars were arrested and tortured however some were lucky enough to have been tipped off and escaped. In the little French harbour of La Rochelle a few of the ships belonging to the Knights Templars "Navy" slipped quickly out to see.
They sailed, as usual, under the Knights Templars Navy ensign .... of a skull over two crossed thighbones on a black background. A symbol they are reputed to have brought back with them from their secret find on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.
Since Friday 13th october 1307 the skull and crossbones has wrongly been seen as a symbol of rebellion and/or lawlessness.
