It doesn't help that people keep responding to the absurd comments made by the trolls.

Trolls do have some entertainment value...that's why we keep them around for a while. If there are some that are becoming particularly obnoxious...please PM me. I certainly don't want long standing members jumping ship because we have a few annoying rats on board.

I have my own list but it's always helpful to hear opinions of others.

That changes everything. I'd have to weigh the balance of arguments very carefully before supporting any opinion on this. Taste testing may (or may not) be involved.

Let's just save some time. You're all wrong.

There, now can we get back to talking about cake?

Cake is never wrong. If you think American cake is wrong, you're unAmerican and should reconsider your residency.

There - I think that's pretty much summed up the arguments so far.

Some of them are certainly like that, but they're not necessarily typical of the whole 350 million. Here where I live (on a Caribbean island) there are good and bad, but mostly good. Now that we're retired, my wife and I are intending to go to Mexico later in the year and try one or two of the gringo colonies there. We have no fears that the US residents there will be hard to get on with.

Cake can be wrong. Have you ever seen a cake do a crossword? Utterly useless.

But yeah, sometimes these types of threads do get out of hand, which is a shame, because there are enough of us who have gone through various stages of life in the US that we're a bubbling well of knowledge.

For example, I was tired of it here for quite a while, about 4-5 years ago and I was able to get out the other end.

I didn't really stop thinking the grass was greener until I'd been here 7 or 8 years and finally assimilated. Boiled down to finding good friends in all honesty. Also pulling my head out of my arse helped (disclaimer - not saying that everyone who can't settle in the US has their head up their arse... just me )

I was fine at first, then we went to the UK a couple of years after moving and I kind of got homesick after that. It was stupid really, there was no reason for it, but I couldn't help it. I was an arsehole for a few years but eventually I forgot what it was that I was upset about and made the best of it.
