He did say he had to try several different spellings before he could get it accepted.

The funny thing is that variations on "shagger" are all fine and dandy because as we all know, shagging is just an unfashionable dance style from the middle of the last century.

Demonstrating that I have too much time on my hands at the moment, I read some of the various state's rules. Some, at least, don't allow 'duplication' of an existing plate by way of 'substitution'; in other words, HELLO and HE11O and HELL0 (zero at end) may be considered dupes of each other and thus not be allowed. Not sure how aggressively each state pursues that type of rule.

I paid 250 quid 4 or so years ago to the DVLA to have a plate that was 3 random characters and my initials. I paid 49 bucks to the CA DMV to get a plate that actually says something. Although, I now wish I had gone for U TWAT which is still ablvailable.

Either the CA DMV know what clunge means, or someone already has the plate

Re: Funny license plate
When I first moved to CA I often used to see a vehicle with the license plate WANKER. But I remember someone telling me that the DMV finally cottoned on to what that word means and withdrew the plate. No idea whether that's true though.

We discussed each other's plates (YEWANKA and BOLLOKS) over dinner and agreed that the US is indeed a land of opportunity!

A few years ago (actually, more than a few years ago) I went in to the DMV here in San Diego and went through the book of plates already taken, and wanker 1/2/3/4, etc were all taken, as was any variations I could think of. There used to be an old El Camino around here that had the plate EL BOLUX

I actually met the owner of that plate last month. He's an elderly gentleman living in East Bay area, originally from Liverpool been a US resident for several decades now.

'TWAT' shows up in the 'banned' list for many states so I'm not sure if you'd get it!

[QUOTE=Steerpike;10907110]That sounds about right - an elderly, white haired gentleman. I forget the make/model of car; nothing memorable (wasn't an MG or roller or anything like that!)
I have a picture of the aforementioned plate and vehicle here on my handy, dandy iphone and I can confirm that the vehicle is a Mercury something-or-other.
And yes, white haired gentleman who still has that cheeky Scouse humour. (I offer the licence plate as further evidence to my statement.)
I do know his name etc but feel that would be tmi without his permission.
