Please your ****ing self. I sold my UK company in lubricant testing to a US company, for a hell of a lot of money, I think there was a reason. You are wrong, there are clear ways to "just" meet the standards which are not good for your engine. There's a reason why a top grade of oil costs what it does, and a supermarket grade costs what it does.

I am confused on Canola, I read some places that's it's great and other places that it's the worst. I use olive oil for dressings, but for frying or popcorn I use Canola. Thoughts?

Just meeting the standards is just sense, you are doing what is required and not more, which is clearly sensible for all, why would a vast business spend millions on r&d resulting in specs, then ignore them. If it needed a higher standard the manufacturer would require it - they pay for warranty claims after all - as i said earlier exceeding the requirement' sounds lovely, costs more and rarely provides benefit.

Steve is taking about oil that "just" meets the standards at the point of sale, but degrades rapidly afterwards, as opposed to a quality product that meets the standards throughout its entire life in useage.

Understood, but in this case, the standard isnt meaningful at point of sale, it has to provide a level of protection for a time or usage, or it fails the standard, as defined by the motor manufacturers trade body.

Its a bit deep, but see this - ACEA Engine Oil Specifications - oilspecifications.org

Canola is also called rapeseed.

Cold pressed requires huge pressures but people rave over it like olive oil, not cheap.

The normal stuff is not expensive, is the best for frying because it has a very high burn point, it doesnt oxidise easily. It is natural, and better for you than soya blended/unknown or corn oil. A lot better than the extended life oils used commercially, these are only marginally edible - and often 'pass through' unchanged...

I also use pure peanut oil sometimes, also very good, but always pricey.

Air popped popcorn is the way to go, no oil required.

Too messy. Just pop it in a pan with some oil and it comes out great.

We do use oil when we make popcorn normally and you're right, it does turn out great - just a bit of salt and you're good to go.
