Ha, my 5 year old son has meant that we've already mastered the art of being quick

I don't recall ever having a fresh off the boat feeling, but if I did it probably passed very quickly because I started work in my new job five days after I arrived. That said, I still get occasional "WTF am I doing here?" moments that usually hit me in an incongruous situation which I could never imagined my self doing in the UK, such as the time I was sitting astride the ridge of my house demolishing a chimney.

Don't worry. It goes away after about, oh, 15-20 years!

I haven't done that for a long time but my dad went straight for the driver's side of my car at LAX when he came to visit. I stood back and watched for a while waiting for him to realise

I didn't properly settle in until about the 2 year mark. What I miss now though, is the awe I used to feel when seeing my surroundings (mountains, big wide roads, large cars/trucks etc.). It now all just gets filtered out.

I do get a strange feeling if ever I go back to visit. It's like I've never left and going to the US was one big dream.

Yeah, I'll have to try that. It's my dream to do a cross country road trip one day. I expected the drive to Vegas to be a long dust road, but the 15 is just a regular freeway. Disappointed.

Ahh but if you head up the 395 there's several cross country roads, for example through Death Valley that are rather interesting...I only take the 15 if I'm in a rush.

I know all the good ones, been exploring for years.

I had been here about 4 months, and found myself driving on the left hand side of a 2 lane road at night. Soon moved to the right.

I like to eat ribs, a rack or half rack, and I eat them exclusively using a knife and fork. If the ribs are properly cooked I can strip them bone-dry clean using a knife and fork, whereas someone eating them with their fingers makes a big ol' mess, and doesn't get all the meat off the bones.

I was watched by the waitress once at The Cheesecake Factory in Chicago, every time she passed I was getting sideways glances. I was in Chicago alone on business and therefore eating at the bar. When I had reduced the whole rack to a pile of bone dry bones, and obviously had had no use for the bowl of lemon water and towel she had thoughtfully brought me at the start of the meal, she came to collect my plate and told me she had never seen anyone eat ribs with a knife and fork before!
