Default Freezing....in Texas.

This past weekend my 13-year-old central heater died. I'd noticed a slight burning plastic odor but didn't think anything of it until it got colder at night and I couldn't get the heater to work.

After two days of sub-60 F and grey weather, it's now pretty chilly in here and space heaters do not work in an open floor plan. Found out today that the service company believes it's the blower fan and plans to replace maybe tomorrow at a cost of $500.

What SUCKS is that this was the spring I was going to replace the entire unit, so if I do that, I'll be throwing away a $500 fan; but it'd take about a week at minimum to put in a new unit because the ductwork needs redoing. The temperature will be even colder later in the week.

Argh.

Yeah.... it has to look very silly to the posters who live near the tundra, but it gets old to be chilly here in the house. At least they don't have cedar fever up there.... I never knew human beings could sneeze in so many different sonic timbres until this week at work.

nonsense

put the new unit in tomorrow, will take no longer than half a day for a package system, or a day for a split system

if the duct work was fine with the old system it will at least function with a new system

once new system is in - fix ductwork

you may just need to find a good contractor

therein lies the problem.... how to get a good recommendation?

I wonder how many people have used Angie's List.... Toon and I both have demanding jobs and my brother's surgery is tomorrow so I've got very little time to decide and act.

Allow me to laugh at you. HA, I say. Again, HA!

Forecast for my town on the upcoming Saturday:
High: 5 (yes, that's the warmest it will be)
Low: -10
Wind: 37 MPH
Windchill (at the high): -25

We don't even put on the heat until it's below about 50.

/gotta move to Florida.

Its bloody cold here too, with rain expected over the weekend. Hopefully some heat will return next week.

What Bob says you big puss.

FYI- changing a blower motor is usually a pretty simple job...if you know a good man with tools.
