Shows how exciting my days are, doesn't it??
I've just been told there'll be a graduate student from Library School coming to observe me for two hours tomorrow, she's writing a paper on reference desk interactions. Please make sure this thread is active between 10:00 and 12:00 EST tomorrow, so that I can maniacally & repetitively mutter (under my breath) selected words in both US & British accents.

How does one say

"Tower of Babel"

I say baybill, those around me say babill

I first noticed it with, how to my ears, the 2006 film was wrongfully pronounced.

Hmm I think it was called the Tower of Baybill in Religious Studies, but then again it is connected to 'babble'.

How about Connecticut. English people conscientiously pronounce all the vowels. And sometimes the "c".

For reasons best known to herself, my mum puts an 'r' in Chicago (Chicargo)!!

Or there's Jeremy Clarkson's great pronounciation of Michigan (Mitch-igan) . . .

Massachusetts has the Berkshires (pronounced exactly how it looks!), while the UK uses Barkshire. And then there is Worcestershire and Worcester sauce. I was going to say that I won't even attempt to phoneticize how those two get massacred in the US -- but I guess that in actual fact they just use every consonant in there, while we ignore some!

I have used the stuff since I could sit at a table (and am not happy when it's not stocked at restaurants) AND I say it Woostershur sauce.

Leicester is butchered by Americans, so I notice with interest that a google of "leicester usa" gives me several. I would like to know how the inhabitants of

Leicester, Massachusetts
Leicester, New York, in Livingston County
Leicester, North Carolina
Leicester, Vermont
Leicester Township, Clay County, Nebraska

say the name of their town
