Florida is the worst state in the nation in every way, new rankings say | Miami Herald

Well, I guess I'm moving to Michigan then.

Is that going to be full time, or just weekends when OrangeMan is around?

Looking at their results, I would want to know their methodology.

Guess the answer lies in this sentence from the article:

"Specifically, the states’ contributions to America, like inventions, food and drink, “somewhat productive famous people,” and unique physical beauty, among other things."

All those people who made Michigan great as per the above, have retired and moved to Florida.

Miami Herald article quotes the survey,

By contrast, Michigan, Thrillist rhapsodizes, “has more coastline than any state other than Alaska?”
Where did they get that from? According to the Wikipedia article on the topic, whichever measure used, Alaska is first and Florida second in terms of length of coastline...

See: Coastline paradox

Of course, you have to use different scales to bias the measurements between states.

I thought I heard that Maine claimed the longest coastline, at least other than Alaska, at something like 3,500 miles!

True, but, however measured, Alaska is longest and FL second longest? Or no?

Especially if you bring supermarkets into it.

"Alaska has salmon in the rivers that you can catch. But Florida has Publix, which has salmon in the freezer." Moral; Alaska & Florida are equal, on the salmon front.

It depends on whether/ how you measure coves, inlets, fjords, etc. Florida's coast is relatively "smooth" with few inlets compared Maine, which a has a much more jagged coast, but do you measure into each inlet, or just measure straight across the mouth of the inlet?

So the shorter the "yardstick" you use to measure the coast, the longer the coast will be, but the effect of the shorter yardstick is much more significant when the coastline is jagged - hence Maine's 3,500 miles of coastline.
