First meal
#46
Had a short trip back last month. Was offered fish and chips by the in laws on the first night, and had a superb curry on the last night.
In between, I managed to catch up on custard tarts, malt loaf, chocolate croissants and jaffa cakes ( and brought a disgraceful amount back with me too
) - not all at once you understand, just a nice steady stream for the whole trip !!
Quite had my fill, I have to say - and content to get back to my normal shop here for a while - till the cravings kick in again

Well, after my recent stint back there, I now know EXACTLY what i shall be doing for my first meal.
Taking OH to the Toby pub carvery lunch. Chefs carve you up a choice of 4 roasts or a mix of all of them on one plate. The biggest and crispiest yorkshire pud ever!! crsipy roast tatties, yum yum yummy horseradish sauce with lashings or thick dark tasty gravy.
For pudding their rhubarb crumble witht he bottomless custard jug (as many refills as you like)
All washed down with a nice beer.
OMG! i can practically taste it all... let me tell you, once you have had that meal its hard work summoning up the energy to make it to the car park!

OK, so I am not going back to the UK, but, there are things that I miss, including the food. When you go back, or get back to the UK, what would be your first meal, assuming you had free rein to eat whatever you wanted? I have a little list in the back of my mind, of what I would want to eat, if I went back to the UK for a visit, and am curious to know what others would make a beeline for.
Mine, for the record, would have to be a steak and kidney pie and chips, smothered in HP sauce, from a proper chippy, preferably the chippy in Exening, nr. Newmarket... then, for afters, sticky toffee pudding, or jam roly poly with custard.
Sooo, what do you all have on your list?

I live there and st0pped for some chips there after work the other week. Not that good though compared to the one in the Rookery :-(
Its been taken over by maybe Greek?, not sure family and the thing that made it nice was chairs outside now, reading the paper so it looked v European.

Now you've got me puzzled! The one in the Rookery is still there is it? That wasn't a bad place. Is that absurdly expensive Chinese Restaurant still open on the High Street? I can't believe I paid 45 quid for a takeaway for two of us.

D you remember Revelations in the Rookery? That was a quaint tea shop/restraunt. Its a chineese now too. Ive just come back from Exning - walking the dog in the park there where they play football.

I do miss Exning, apart from attempting to ride my horse up that one little lane next to the Duck pond, it was always slippery
Next time you go there, stop by the stable yard (the one with the barn converted into a house) and tell Vicki that Sue and Peter said hi!Bugger, it's a small world.

Yup, the Fountain. I used to live in the flats across the road (Black Bear Court) and my kitchen window overlooked the place, it was a veritable who's who of racing on race and Tattersalls days, so my curtain was always a-twitching. Plus, in the afternoons, the restaurant staff were all up in their flat watching the racing and no doubt betting their weekly wages.

When dog was walking kids were in swimming pool opposite your old flat
They are just finishing building a new olympic sized pool next to the sports centre so I expect that little pool may go at some point. Yes its such a small world. Now I have your name, I dont think we do know one another, not sure - but everyone knows everyone here - u cant hide - so maybe? Your names ring a bell from a job I used to do, it will come to me.Glad you are happy where you live and have been ballsy enough to come and visit this site after the other thread. Its a nice forum, nice people - but a lot on here are on here because theyve had/are having a hard time as you probably have read about a lot by now, so people are generally very supportive/protective of others feelings.
Going back to the food...It was always crisps with flavours - Pickled onion monster munch and chocolate. Perhaps thats why Ive put on nearly a stone since being back

Anyway, good to meet you

If it comes to you, drop me a PM, I'm as intrigued as you are!
I am very glad to be here. I'm also more than willing to offer support, it is tough to be homesick and be stuck somewhere that you don't want to be and can't leave. The attachment to home is a strong one and hard to sever, if not impossible.
Food....hmmm, McCoys crisps, the cheesy ones. Also a decent butcher, newmarket sausages, a pork roast with crackling..oh, I could go on and on and on...but I don't want to get drool all over my keyboard.

I was back in the UK for just 6 days in January and my first meal was Chicken Tikka Jalfrezi, pillau rice & peshwari naan, so was the following night, and the night after that!! Out of the 6 days, I ate curry every night except one when I had a Special Chow Mein!! After two years of being away from any Indian take-aways I had to go on overdrive in such a short space of time!
Flea's meal at that Toby place had me salivating good time...I do enjoy a proper carvery roast dinner with yorkshire puds, crispy roasties and gravy. Canadians don't have a clue on how to serve up a good roast....they think it should be accompanied by salads and potato or macaroni salad
I would top any meal I have over there with a dessert with "real, whipped double cream"....not that artificial canned stuff or cool whip we get here.
