Re: Cost of running a pool..

Most of the public or HOA pools that I have used have been set to 80° but typically vary from 78°-82°. At 80° I find it OK but below that it seems too cold and above that up to 82° I find very comfortable.

I don't think I would care for a pool set at 88° or above.

If you do go for it make sure it has a convenient cover arrangement.
If the cover is easy to take on and off you can leave the cover in place and it'll help retain heat and cut down evaporation.
I was suprised from that chart that it was more to heat the pool in LA than San Francisco. Is the gas more expensive down there?
Our pool has the heater disconnected and when we moved in last August it was 78 degrees with no cover. So a cover will take it up a degree or two more.
Personally I prefer it less than 80 so it's refreshing rather than a bath!

If you're going to be paying your own water bill make sure the pool is leak free or get some statment in your rental regarding leakage. I work repairing them and even small ones can add up to alot.

Good luck.

This is actually one of the biggest myths going, which people don't realise till they get to said hot place and want to use the pool year round.

Since I got my pool heat pump last year (Thanks for the recommendation Ray!) I've realised what a mare it is to not have it heated. Especially so when you've got children who want to swim all the time.

Heat pumps very economical to run too especially if you have a cover. Just set your desired temp and forget about it.

Tell him to stop it....
I used to service the electrical side of pools and the amount of pubic hair I had to pull out of the filters was not funny...:frown:

Unless you are living in the hot inland areas of California, overnight temperatures usually drop significantly cooling the water. Evening lows during the summer are usually in the 50s or low 60s depending on where you live in the state.

I suspect that California is probably one of the more expensive states to keep a pool heated during the summer.

We have one of those auto pool cleaners so that helps. Our monthly gas for heating the pool is about $500/600 per month June/July/August (that was a few years ago...I haven't looked at the bills since.)...I like it at 90+ degrees...plus we have a large deep pool.

SOLAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had big gas bills.... Installed solar pool eating on my roof... Next gas bill...$16.50. After a few times of coming to fill the tanks and finding them still full they told me they wanted their tanks back.

My pool is 35,000 gallons and my solar heats it to basically any temperature I want(reasonable it won’t boil) as long as there is sun.

We have a solar heated pool and have been told we should be able to use it end March through to November. I think we need a few more hot days yet though as today the temp is showing as 67 degrees which is just a bit too refreshing for me :)

My husband put in solar heating for a hotel pool in Maine last year and they didn't have to switch the heating on till Fall... or should I say Autumn?

Most with pools in my area drain them in the fall and they sit empty all winter. I am in southern BC so I'd imagine most in colder areas are doing the same.

Yes it is very large and we have an extra long deep end that is also unusually deep.

Solar works really great. My wife suggested it... I didn't really believe it would work but I figured it would help and since there was a tax credit for it I gave it a try... Fantastic. It works like a charm. My pool is very shaded so it would normally never get much above 76 or so now we can keep it at 86 and we can extend our season about one month early and one month at the end without using a pool cover.

It really works.

Urgh....I can't wait to get ours filled in. It's gonna cost us about $3,500 and that will be a bargain considering how much it costs to run every year, for the approx. 3 full days we get to spend in it in Maine.

Pain in the bleedin arse.

and ours is a 33,000 galloner....the mosquitos love it :frown:
