I do not want a huge Thanksgiving style row with her family over the matter, either. Not sure how to proceed. I feel I am fighting against a cultural norm. here, one that has no scientific reason (apart form reduced male to female HIV transmission rates, according to published literature).

Well, you aren't going to "win" any argument with mothers that have already circumcised their babies, are you? As far as your in-laws go, the only thing you can do here is not engage in the argument. I'd use the line " we all do what we think is best for our kids, I respect you for doing that, just as I will do what I think is best for my kids". Your wife on the other hand..... if you haven't had kids yet then this is an issue you need to get on the same page with, preferably before she becomes pregnant. She is the one who will get all the pressure from her sisters to circumcise since not doing it will be seen (quite rightly) as a criticism of what they did. If the best argument put forward for circumcision is to prevent bullying then she will need reassuring on that one. How likely is bullying over circumcision? I'm betting very unlikely. For me, as a mum, what I'd like to hear from my husband would be "I promise you, if he is bullied over this,we will deal with it then"

I remember from my Army days there was a program to encourage soldiers to get circumcised. From the Army's point of view it made sense since cases of the clap were often a problem and even though condoms were available free of charge there were always the idiots who neglected to use them.

I remember my troop sergeant saying to me "In case you're thinking of having it done Gunner Koop just forget about it. You go around half cocked enough as it is"

Male circumcision is nearly universal in the Muslim world and in Israel due to the religious requirements of the majority of Muslims and Jews"

Funny, isn't it, that circumcision would be the custom that unites both Muslims and Jews

I suppose that it must have something to do with them both being deluded religious fanatics ...

Fwiw, I'm against making any permanent changes to a child's body until they are old enough to make that decision themselves, unless there is medical need. This includes ear piercing.

At least with ear piercing, they can heal back over. A foreskin can't regrow, though I believe there is a movement that attaches weights to the skin and makes it stretch back.

When I had our son, in the UK years ago,the doctor asked me, when DH had gone home, if I wanted son to be circumcised. I just told him, no, as I was still half asleep from anesthesia. If he wanted to get it done now when he is of an age to make an informed decision, then he could. Even the religious nutters that feel that mutilating a child is the right thing to do, should hold off, until that child is an adult, and able to make their own choice about their own body. A good medical reason for circumcision should be the only way allowed, although there might be some that would grease the doctor's palms with silver to make an exception for them or their child.

if a doctor came along and said, can I cut your child's ear lobes off , I bet majority of people would say no. So why is any other part of the part any different. It should be a criminal act to unnecessarily mutilate a persons body without their consent.

Weird you use earlobes. My daughter was born with a bigish skin tag on her ear lobe. The doc doing the physical check pointed it out and said you can have that cut off quite easily. I replied that it wasn't hurting her, it was harmless why the hell would I have someone cut bits off her??? The idea of cutting more important bits off an infant is barbaric.

My youngest daughter has one ear that sticks out significantly (due to her going head down in utero very early, and the ear being bent against my pelvic bone while it was developing). When she was very young (a few months old), her pediatrician started trying to convince me to have surgery done to fix it.

Our conversation went something along the lines of:

Me: "Will it be just as easy to do the operation when she's older or are there some advantages to doing it now?"
Pedi: "It's the same whenever it's done."
Me: "Then it's her decision to make, isn't it?"

End. Of. Story.

If it's an elective procedure, there's only one person who's qualified to decide if and when to have it done, and that's the person whose body it is.

Vile barbaric practice. Whenever the subject of female mutilation is brought up I raise the male issue which always gets shouted down.

I'm so glad I stuck to my guns and fought for my US born son.

Quite honestly how simple minded can you get to cut something from a child's body under the guise of religion or health. I feel sure if it were not needed then we would not have it. Thus since it comes as part of the package it must be needed...

I recall a deluded friend at Uni who underwent the procedure at about 22 years so he could marry his love - an israeli girl. Fast forward 10 years and divorced I often wonder how he feels about his decision now!

There are many strange things done to people in the name of religion whether it be of a physical or mental nature.

Isn't Trump going to deport all circumcised men because statistically they are more likely to be Muslim ?

That does it for me then unless I can pass myself off as Jewish

The religious justification puzzles me. If you believe in an infallible divine creator, why assume he got something so categorically wrong in half his creations, that mere mortal man must 'fix'?
