Christmas Pudding

I know it's a bit premature to be talking about Christmas but I would like to know where you all buy your Christmas Puddings from (sourced from within the US, please!) as I have never made one from scratch before and I want to surprise my husband this year. Any good websites?

Any help would be appreciated! Many thanks!!!!!

Re: Christmas Pudding

made mine from scratch using the Delia Smith recipe. Had a bit of trouble getting some ingredients (barley wine - just used stout instead, had to look up the spice she wanted online and make my own mix of it, and suet - had to ask a butchers dept) but it came out great! The other difficult part was getting a steaming bowl - as they dont have anything specific like that here. Used a pyrex bowl in the end - but bought some plastic lidded pudding basins when i was back in the UK last time ready for this year (as well as the missing soice lol).

Re: Christmas Pudding

We did from scratch too - luckily my mate is a butcher so sorted me some suet out.

Otherwise, try the uk online grocers, I know some friends of ours ordered from The English Pork Pie Company earlier this year and were suitably impressed! So impressed they never saved me anything :frown:

We've ordered from Goodwoods, Camerons (well visited not ordered, it's up the road) with decent enough results.

When I lived in Michigan I could find them in K Mart and Meijers...have to look hard...not in the usual places. If you're near the CA border you could hop over and get one there.

Made mine from scratch - used Delia too (with appropriate substitutions)

Cooked it in the slow cooker / crockpot in pyrex (a handy hint I read somewhere) was the first time I'd done it like that - was fantastic - just went out and left it cos it couldn't go dry like a pan could

So do you just sit the pyrex in the slow cooker and turn it on - no water or anything? does it take same amount of time as steaming or longer?

I only ask as i did let one saucepan go dry last year making mine (well it was going for flipping hours) and it has damaged the pan.

Ok, I may have exaggerated a tad, it was definitely over $2 though!

must be they went up then... the last one I bought was something like $1.59 or $1.79

pabby Sep 4th 2008 7:30 am

Re: Christmas Pudding

I'd have bought more than one if they were that price. I also bought a Topic - which appear to have shrunk since the last time I had one. Either that or my hands have grown.

Out of interest I pulled the receipt out, last one I bought was Aug 2 and cost $1.59. Your being ripped off if you are paying over $2

MsElui Sep 4th 2008 7:58 am

Re: Christmas Pudding

suet is the shredded fat from around the kidneys ! I asked in the local supermarket butchers dept and they produced a solid lump of the stuff in a sealed packet - and told me i would have to buy it all. Cost me about 5 bucks (was about the size of 2 fists). I just cut it into lumps and stuck the unused stuff in the freezer - and then shredded it in the blended. I actually bought some vegetarian suet from blightly when i was last there too!

i got a tub of what is supposed to be lard from the same supermarket - on a shelf adjacent to the butchers dept. Doesnt look exactly like the british stuff either. My mince pies were a disaster too! will work on them again this year - now I have a bit more time to plan.

Look for manteca in the "ethnic" section

Re: Christmas Pudding

Once you've made this stuffing yourself, you'll never, ever look at a box of Paxo again!

This is absolutely devine. I've made it for 4 years in a row - last year managed to get away with it just the once, but previously (before moving to the US) at least 3 times. It's absolutely lush!

http://www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/m...as-or-any-time

Oh, and the same goes for Delia's Christmas pudding. Not even a F&M one comes close!

Re: Christmas Pudding

what was the problem with the mince pies?

Orangepants Sep 4th 2008 8:49 am

Re: Christmas Pudding

You have to have lard to make great mince pies -(half and half with butter) the pastry is so much richer and crumblier.

I made christmas pudding last year with some suet my sis gave me but didn't know how to explain it at the grocery store - great to know that it can be bought someplaces.

I was in Tescos 2 weeks ago and nearly bought a load of suet, but then thought better of it because we just don't need mince pies!

Mind you, I could have sold it to you lot ;)

Re: Christmas Pudding

I've always been lazy and used ready made pastry - usually shortcrust.
