When I was first dating my wife she had just arrived from China and knew nothing about Halloween or any other Western holiday. That year I grabbed a bag of candy corn as sort of an impulse buy and gave her some saying 'we used to love this stuff as kids' and then kind of forget about it.

Few months later, come Easter my mom made an aside 'are you going to buy an Easter basket full of candy for my son--it is Easter'. Unclear on the whole candy convention of what goes with what holiday, she did get me an Easter basket, but she had it filled with Halloween candy corn.

It was sweet.

Candy corn is an only if I'm desperate thing, even then I regret it. I purchased my candy to give out at Halloween today...............trying so hard not to open the bags.

so - forgive my ignorance but what is the general quota of candy that any one child knocking at your door gets ?

On tv you see kids with pumpkin style handbags full of stuff. How many sweeties and goodies does the average household have to stock ?

And what do you do if you run out ?

We don't give out any. I tell them I'm British and we don't engage in such blatent blackmail with people smaller and less intelligent than us.

They usually bog off and I save some money!

That can't be true ..... even in England we used to trick or treat. The treats maybe were not always brilliant but we had some good tricks.

I've never been trick or treating, even in the UK. Mind you, we lived in north London, so any kids who knocked on our door were rough as hell and met with stony stares and absolutely f-all for treats.

Plus, my parents were teachers and hated kids at their schools knowing where they lived, so sometimes we didn't even open the door.

A) You don't run out. You make sure you buy something that you like so when you have extra you have something to eat. How much, it depends a lot on your area. Where I live we get zero (0) kids, but the subdivision down the way is utter chaos--hundreds. Best to ask the neighbors.

B) Buy a bag that is pre-divided. Something with two small candy bars or something. Never give out candy loose as that sets off alarm bells that you are trying to poison the kids. Two or three small candy bars or lollys or whatever is fine.

so - if you have kids then on average what you spend comes back in your own kids' pumpkins.

People who don't have kids are either generous or just generally lose out ?

Depends how fast they can run from door to door.

Some smart parents send the kids out the night before to some other subdivision/town that allows early trick or treating. They load up on stuff, and the crap they don't like they give to the parents who distribute the next day to visiting kids. Then you get a rep as the 'house with the candy that sucks' which leads to fewer visitors next year.
