I think if you mix with other Brits wherever you are abroad, you will keep your essential British identity, if you mix mainly with the locals, as I do, I think you take on the characteristics of the locals, using there language and stuff.
I have been in the states 2 years now, hardly ever meet another Brit, except at the local fish & chip cafe, or maybe occasionally out shopping somewhere. I try to keep away from the British contingency here in Florida, they mostly give you a load of BS. When I first arrived in the states I wanted to keep up with all things British, now I could'nt care less.

I have never felt British, especially since the Scots and Welsh and Irish all got permission to mis-rule themselves again.
I am as English as they come as far as my colleagues and neighbours are concerned but after spending 26 years sailing around the world I do not feel very English any more.
My outlook is much more cosmopolitan which is partly why I don't have much sympathy for the "Homesick Brigade" on this forum.
