Anyone else sick of GM Food & lack of labelling

Re: Anyone else sick of GM Food & lack of labelling
I don't understand why the rest of the world is up in arms about it. What's inherently wrong with 'new and improved'?
Granted, not all humanly-engineered genetic modifications are necessarily an improvement. Then again, neither are mother nature's genetic modifications necessarily an improvement, either. She's made some pretty nasty stuff in her day and there are plenty of organic thing out there that will make a person violently ill or that will kill them.
Regards, JEff

Doesn't take much to label goods and so people can chose to avoid or not.
Bit like folks not being to impressed about getting horse instead of cow...just not knowing where it's been or what you're getting.
Anyway, labels, they have gotten loads better over the last few years, even places like Walmart have gotten better able saying if something is veggie friendly or not.

It's all about choice though isn't it.

I agree with you it is all about choice. We just want to be informed thats all then we can all choose whether you eat it or not right now there is no choice unless you buy organic. I don't know why it is so hard to label well I do because im sure it will affect the sales of GM foods and they don't want that.
Yes I agree the labelling has got slighty better but only in some stores where I am anyway.

You could always look for the non-GMO project stamp. http://www.nongmoproject.org/
The website also has a lot of info about GMO food as well. Obviously it is anti GMO so comes at it from that stand point but there are a lot of things listed that are basic facts, like GMO corn was engineered to produce insecticide that will kill insects that eat it and because GMO crops can tolerate pesticides in much higher doses there are "super" bugs that are evolving that require some pretty strong stuff to kill. Just the same way we've done with antibiotics really.

The organic certification does not include GMO testing. Although much less likely than non-organic, organic items made up of several ingredients do contain GMO items.

If we don't sort out whatever it is that is killing the bees we won't have any good anyway, modified or not.

I'm not sure of the importance of labeling for genetics when we can't even pin down the main ingredient.

Plus the ingredient dec, like the rest of the food packaging is designed to make you buy the food. A "no GM" tag can't possibly mean NO GM. It will mean a reasonable chance of when tested will contain less than ?% GM derivatives". You will still have no idea how much GM material went into the making of the food. Think of a lovely big steak (mmmmm). Label it "no GM" because it has not been genetically modified. It has still been raised eating GM produce. It depends how far you want to take the fear of GM.
"Tomatoes" on an ingredients dec doesn't need to mean actual tomatoes. You can sub tomato concentrate and water volume and still call it "tomatoes". It just sounds nicer and pushes other things further down the declaration list.
