I'm sure I recall someone somewhere suggesting taking out the thick and generally useless foam padding on airline seats and doing a sort of mesh type seat like Herman Miller Aeron office chairs. Not only more comfortable but lighter weight and instantly gains inches in leg room. I think one airline considered the idea then it disappeared.

Someone would probably poke their finger through the mesh and get the finger stuck, and sue the airline for "pain and suffering" through their own stupid actions.

Its good for trains, and I've been on a bus that did that too. It gets my vote.
