Left leaning Facebook groups, often post the more extreme material of the right, either as a warning, to laugh at, or as in this case, to just drop your jaw to.

Trump and Melania have confirmed they're positive with the 'rona.
Hope they all recover, but that silly dope should have been wearing a facemask instead of mocking Biden for wearing one.

The question now becomes: will this cause a ‘rally around the flag’ effect?
Or will people think it’s his own fault?

I think it’s thrown a whole new unpredictable aspect into the election. All scenarios are possible from it’s not true and he’s just saying he’s positive to avoid the next debate, to the virus making a lot of people seriously ill like Trump, Pence, many WH staff and potentially Biden after he was shouted at for 90 minutes in an enclosed space on Tuesday. And everything in between.
hold onto your hats, the rollercoaster is off on a new set of uncharted twisty tracks.

its a worry - just look how people ceased criticism of Johnson when he was ill.

For a moment there I was trying to think what kind of a job you'd be in to know the minutiae of Andrew Johnson getting ill and how the public reacted and then I realised that you meant that other clown, I didn't think that there had been much waning in criticism. In Johnson's defence he still carries that image of a buffoon and are there really that many people who'd like to see him dead?
Anyway, my memory from when he was hospitalised was that was when the UK collectively realised this was actually serious and we'd better pull together and do something, and criticism of him personally was lessened during his illness. Of course, all that goodwill and compliance and national togetherness has been squandered in the UK, and Johnson has long since reverted to being a shambolic buffoon in both appearance and in his performance as Prime Minister. I personally didn't want him dead, like I don't really want Trump dead. I'd prefer to see Trump trounced in an election and then held accountable in various courts of law for his tax frauds, perjuries, abuse of power and assaults on women.
What I was trying to say was, if Trump or his wife or one of his family does get ill, then the US could also see a moment of national togetherness, patriotism and goodwill, which could have an unpredictable impact on how people vote. But given that Hope Hicks seems to have been generous in spreading around the virus, who knows who is going to be testing positive, and who is going to go on and develop symptoms, and who could fall seriously ill. Here's the October surprise Trump was predicting. The final few months of his presidency (I hope) playing out like a reality tv show, just like the previous four years.

Re: 2020 Election
a) He has minor illness, and confirms the conspiracy theories that it's a minor illness and we shouldn't be taking all these precautions and causing economic fallout over it
b) He has serious illness, and drops out of the election all together - then what? Who is the Republican nominee? Some votes have already been cast in early voting - what happens to them?
c) He dies (no, I'm not saying I hope that happens. I too would rather see him get his day in court) and "b" above, plus the sympathy effect on the populace.

I'm trying to avoid saying "Boris", ever since I realised that its part of his projected brand and image, and so trying to be consistent in how I refer to politicians.

I don't at all disagree with you, but would just like to say that support for Trump and his sycophants is not any definition of "patriotism" that I recognize.

Whereas I'm in the camp that thinks Trump degrades the office every single day, and I can quite happily separate the man from his position. If he actually fell ill with COVID-19, rather than being an asymptomatic carrier as he is at the moment, I would be as sorry for him as I would be any person who got it on a personal level. However, I happen to think the presidency would be stronger without him in role, so I am not worried about what would happen to the country if he was ill enough to be incapacitated. It would be an improvement in situation all round in fact.

Re: 2020 Election
I think being 6 month into the pandemic might crate a different dynamic vs when Boris Johnson was hospitalised. At the time the pandemic was still in it's early stages and I when the PM was hospitalised people were prepared to put aside their differences and take the new pandemic seriously. Given we've now been living with the pandemic for 6 months I think anyone incline to take the pandemic seriously has alreayd done so, and so there's nothing new to put aside differences for. That and I think the UK is still less polarised overall than the US. Thought not by much.
Net net I'm not expecting the kind of surge in goodwill towards Trump that Boris Johnson received.
