.... and I suppose when there's another change of government, it will get abolished again and folks losing money?? Or am I being very cynical?

realistic , not cynical. I don't think that enough people took it up for it be worthwhile and the government lost money on it. That was the problem.

The thing is that the powers that be always want to try to project this image of upmarket wealthy people making Thailand there preferred holiday destination when as I'm sure we both know reality is somewhat different. Although Thailand has got more expensive in recent years ( just like anywhere else ) , I'm fairly sure that many / most people come here because it's a cheap holiday .

I just don't think there are enough takers for it.

Who knows. See what happens. I will not be getting one !
