hi
we plan to emmergrate to Oz, where do we start??? Should we pay a company to help us go through the application process?
does anyone think we will get in? heres the situation
my husband and i are both aged 34 and we have four small children. my husband is a cabaret singer and entertainment manager (does this score any points?) i am currently studying to be a teacher. we would love to go now, but dont think we wold have any points???
i can wait until i have qualified as a teacher, but do i then need to have a certain amount of experience?would my NQT year count as one year?
would we then have enough points to all travel on my teaching points?
are there many jobs as an infant school teacher? do you know what websites i can look for jobs on, so i can see the pay rates?
hope some one out there can help me a little. thanks

Hi,
Before you apply for a visa, you need to have your skills assessed as appropriate for migration. And you need work experience, one year, as far as I know.
You could start with this:

Hello
I am a Technology Teacher and received QTS in 2004 and did my Teacher Training through the GTP route (Graduate Teacher Programme). I am applying for the OZ visa soon and last year I found out that no states in Australia recognize the GTP way of training. I can not teach in Oz unless I retrain over there but on the temporary visa I can not use the government education system until after 2 years of residency. Therefore I am now following other career routes.
I am not sure but I think once you have completed your training year in England you have to do 2 more years before you get Qualified Teacher Status.
Australia's different states have different education authorities and they all have slightly different ways of working. You have to get your qualification recognised by an official government system (which costs). Then you have get recognised by the state in which you want to work.
Western Australia are desperate for teachers and they have a serious shortage therefore they are not as strict on there requirements (but I still could not teach out there).
NSW have a shortage of certain subjects but again they are very strict on who can teach.
I spoke to the boss of the Teacher Registration in NSW and he said that PGCE is accepted way of training because it is academic and it meets the standards in Australia. But even though they accept PGCE this is no guarantee as they seem to be very picky and if they don't have a need for certain teachers they will not accept you as a teacher.
Sorry if I have gone off on a tangent.
Hope this is OK.

My partner has just registered as a teacher in Queensland and it was not simple. Her degree was 3 years at Uni + 1 year on the job probation period (around 1980). The regulations here state you have to have done 4 years of academic training. She was rejected and had to appeal, the result is that she is now registered and able to work but also, she has to do 1 years study over the next 4 years. I should add that her situation was exacerbated by the fact she hasn't worked (in teaching) for the last 20 years. You can get more info at QCT's website.

One of the WA universities has a new 1 year course for those with a 3year teaching degree. Its too top up so you can have your 4 years.

Not sure if this helps - but if teaching is your passion do you have a previous MODL occupation? (Job in demand) I was a Chef in the UK. I taught in FE for a number of years (15). Emigrated here as a Chef 8 months ago and ended up with a really good job teaching at TAFE (FE college). Terms and conditions identical to school? Holidays, pay, superannuation etc etc. You just need a teaching qual of some description, a degree in any discipline helps, trade quals to a high level in the subject to be taught and a willingness to complete the Cert VI in adult ed here in OZ? To the best of my knowledge - I'm sorry. But as good as I'm sure he is. A Cabaret Act will give diddly squat points! Where theres a will theres a way. Best of luck

Hi there you can access state education for kids in Aus on a temporary visa except in NSW where you have to pay. If you are planning to retrain in Aus to get your qualifications here there are various courses including ones for 3 year trained teachers that are a top up for registration so it is worth checking out.
I came over here with hubby in 2005 and did my Dip Ed prep -12 last year. I am now teaching in a secondary school here and I know that most people on our course got jobs easily so there is work out there. We aren't in the city but then again we aren't in the middle of nowhere either so there are compromise positions for those who are struggling to find work in the state capitals.
It can be done if teaching is your passion as they are still short of teachers over here especially at secondary school level.

You need 1 years full time experience (so gets NQT out of the way). Your hubby gets no points as far as I can see. Have to warn you very few Teaching posts advertised in Aus and with lots of Schools Aus experience counts so it'll be a struggle to get a job unless you want to live and work in the middle of no where, in places people wouldn't choose to live in. Not sure why primary teacher is on the list as been looking for months and very few posts come up, can get casual, but no guarantee of any work

Vocational Education here is very structured, and I would say that the Cert IV would be pretty much necessary to allow you to teach and train using training packages. The system for training and assessment is complex, and is much more than just rocking up and giving a lecture/demonstration. Cert IV teaches you how the system works and how you use it to deem candidates competent/not competent.
Most TAFEs and RTOs will require you to either have a Cert IV or be willing to obtain one within a certain time frame. Start looking around for a
So I would start looking around for a Cert IV course. A reasonable one should cost between $1000-2000, which should be tax deductible for you as it's necessary for your job. The other bit of good news is that one of the key points of the AQTF is that RPL must be considered, so the chances are that much of the Cert IV course pertaining to planning, delivery, OHS etc can be covered under RPL from your existing qualifications. The RTO will help you to work through them and advise what they will or will not need from you.
Hope that helps.

Sorry this might be a silly qustion, but is the Certificate IV the same throughout Australia or does each state have a different certificate/requirements?

It's part of the Australian Qualifications Framework, so is nationally accepted across all states and territories. It's more angled towards vocational education and competency based training than teaching. It does seem to be the de facto qualification for working in TAFE though, so if you want to go that way, it's certainly worthwhile getting under your belt.
