I should know the definite answer to this but I think you need to have your teacher registration before you can teach in Queensland (that's the rego from Queensland College of Teachers, as opposed to registering to teach with the state education department).
TAFE and childcare centres (ie: non compulsory schooling) do not require teacher registration but you will need a Blue Card (easier/quicker to obtain than Qld Teacher Rego). To teach at TAFE you usually require a Cert IV in Training and Assessment (or other adult teaching qualification).
When I got a job in the NT the school (Catholic) was able to employ me before my NT teacher registration had come through - there are some provisos for this if schools are struggling to find staff, but not as likely if you are planning to head to SE Queensland.

Yeah, as long as you're registered with the Queensland College of Teachers you can work in private schools.

The Department is the Education department - part of the State government in Queensland. If you want to work in state schools you will need to apply to them (after you have QCT registration). If you want to work in SE Queensland you can also register with TRACER (after you have your QCT and Ed Qld dept numbers) for supply and contracts. The Education dept also advertise contracts on their website (usually in far flung places tho)
Catholic schools - you will need to create an online profile at the Brisbane diocese cath ed website and then apply for jobs (advertised on that site).
Private - depends on the school but many advertised on SEEK, Career One (regular jobs sites) and some on teachers.on.net
Good luck with the job hunt!

Yes - your first step is to apply for teacher registration and that is through the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT), but they aren't a department, they're a professional body of members/teachers.

You definitely need to be registered with the QCT to teach in any school in Queensland (including the independent ones) My husband is a UK trained Primary teacher now teaching in Queensland. It took about 5 months for his QCT registration to come through - luckily he submitted it very early before we moved out to Australia so he had it sorted for his arrival. Make sure all of your transcripts etc have been officially notorised and check and re-check all of your documents before sending them to the QCT to ensure that it is all perfect. I hope this process is quicker for you as I know you are due to arrive quite soon!
Once you have the QCT registration then you can apply for roles in a variety of schools.
For state/government schools you will need to get in touch with your local district on arrival to put down your preferences (where you are prepared to teach/subjects etc). If you are thinking about supply/relief teaching then you also need to register with the TRACER system as this seems to be the way to get relief teaching assignments in QLD state schools. We went into the local Education Queensland office to submit this information and they told us it would take 2 weeks to process.
For Catholic Schools you will need to register your interest with the catholic diocese in your district/area. Again we went into the local Catholic Education office to submit this information.
A lot of independent schools seem to advertise on www.teachers.on.net
My husband was lucky enough to find a job in a lovely independent school. We drove around to all the local schools with his CV, QCT papers and written references asking about supply work and it just so happened that one of these schools was advertising a contract position that he had the right skills and experience for.
I wish you lots of luck for teaching and your new life in Australia! We love it!

Aw... cheers for your reply!
It's got me all excited and hope we have as good luck as you!
Well today was my last day in school - saying goodbye to the kids and staff was heartbreaking as I've been teaching at the school for the past 8 years but exciting too!
If you think of any other tips they will be greatly received!
