Well I'm sure that if I say anything amiss or incorrect, Madridboy (who currently lives there) or the other posters who've been there, will be able to correct me. I'm surprised you've not heard of the pickpockets and street hustlers who operate there - it's quite a well-known problem for tourists there (but not as bad as Barcelona).

We've had this conversation many times on this forum. I always felt fine going for a drink in Madrid at night, far safer than (for example) Oxford centre at night. Yet it's true there is crime there, but it's more likely to be pick-pockets that disrupt your life. I'm not sure you really get "chavs" in Spain. Street hustlers or metro pick-pockets yes. Even a crowd of botellon students creating noise. But picking a fight with you in the street just because they sense you "disrespect" them? No - that's the UK unfortunately.
If you visited a Latin American neighborhood.....

Then what ?
You need to remember that they are not my words, but the words of the author who is stating what he sees around him.
You can watch UK TV and see this every day if you wish on the likes of Police Camera/Jeremy Kyle etc etc.
You can see it portrayed by the roll models (like Katie Price)
You can hear it in the music that is on "most" radio stations.
You can see it on the soaps where they never talk to each other but shout/dress like they are auditioning for a panto/spend their time in a constant argument.
You can of course go and see it on the street in "any" UK city/town as this is what the auto is talking about (not Madrid)
I myself found it bloody hilarious & like a lot of good comedy is based on fact that most can recognise.
The UK has a good deal going for it (a good deal) but this Pikey inspired dress / behaviour / attitude needs to be buried in the nearest landfill where it belongs IMO (of course)

I do not watch it myself (should have put a disclaimer in the last post as sure as night follows day someone would come along and say that they never watch this/that/the other, but funny enough will not miss a second of televised Cricket/Football etc etc)
I take it that you have watched Kyle yourself then ?

What I don't understand is why people (expats that is )like to look at the UK and bemoan and moan about the state its in,,,worry about what's on your doorstep.

There was "no" comparison to Spain, the piece was written by a Brit in the UK, about the UK as he sees it. I made no comparison, but others may have ?
BTW i think you missed the humour.

I was back in the UK and I was travelling on the outward bound district line going through all those depressing Dagenham stops on my way to Upminster. It was daytime and the entire carriage was empty, when a group of Chavs got on a Becontree, and immediately lit cigarettes, defiantly blowing the smoke in my direction, while sipping from their cans of strong lager.
I considered my alternatives. As a respectable, upstanding citizen should I have spoken to them about polluting my air space and ignoring the No Smoking signs? Should I have got off at the next stop? Try and make a citizen’s arrest of six drunken Chavs?
I lit a cigarette to help me think, and the problem went away.

Please though take the time to re-read what I wrote, as Comparison to Spain is not quite the same as Accurate Summary

Either way..in my opinion, it isn't accurate of life in the UK. The majority do not live like that..maybe scally working class in certain areas, but why paint the whole UK like that?
I can take a joke but it gets tiring hearing expats say that the UK is a mess, in a right state or gone to the dogs.
It seems that some expats need to slag off the UK, for some reason. Well I live in Spain too but I never feel that I have to despair at the state of it. It's the way many live. There are worse kinds of people in other countries including Spain.
Just my opinion..which I can freely give and I try and give with some credibility and not stereotype.

Absolutely agree. Not sure why they are so uncomfortable with their spanish life to do it all the time. Sure there are many problems in the UK as there are in Spain or any country. When I am in the UK there are some things I miss in Spain, likewise in Spain I miss some things about the UK.
I think that e-bay thing was written tongue in cheek. Of course there are people like that but unless you live on the sink estates it's not apparent.
