It´s been doing the rounds on other forums for a while now. But worth posting for those that haven´t read it! :)

Where is this Britain? I only ask because I don't see any of it.

The same could be said of any city, and country anywhere in the world... as someone else said elsewhere they were shocked by the amount of "chav" types in Australia...

Oh and I am in the UK.

You're in Dartmoor right? You can see this Britain in any number of the cities - London, Leicester, Oxford, Nottingham, Manchester etc. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if parts of Plymouth weren't bad too. Just because you've found a place without chavs, doesn't mean they don't exist... luckily there are still decent places in all the above mentioned cities too.

Yeah, and in Madrid, Bilboa, San Seb, Marseille (I have never been so scared as in Marseille) Rome... get the idea?

We've had this conversation many times on this forum. I always felt fine going for a drink in Madrid at night, far safer than (for example) Oxford centre at night. Yet it's true there is crime there, but it's more likely to be pick-pockets that disrupt your life. I'm not sure you really get "chavs" in Spain. Street hustlers or metro pick-pockets yes. Even a crowd of botellon students creating noise. But picking a fight with you in the street just because they sense you "disrespect" them? No - that's the UK unfortunately.

Quite agree Matt,as far as I'm concerned all cities worldwide are dodgy places, though some slightly worse than others.
Generally it feels quite a bit safer way out in the wiles of wanny,
Unless of course you happen to see a chav-type sheep driving by your place,
which could well indicate the start of a very worrying trend,
.... or maybe on the other hand simply time to cut down on the old moonshine...

The problem is often just people. The most unwelcoming pubs I've been in have been in small towns/villages. Having said that, I've been in some extremely friendly and hospitable places too. Funny thing, folk..

Well I'm sure that if I say anything amiss or incorrect, Madridboy (who currently lives there) or the other posters who've been there, will be able to correct me. I'm surprised you've not heard of the pickpockets and street hustlers who operate there - it's quite a well-known problem for tourists there (but not as bad as Barcelona).
