Looks like POSE had a bad night. For many of us expats who live in Valencia we now have a PP government which will mean changes in things like inheritance tax so they will probably amount to zero of under a million euros - similar to Madrid,Murcia and AndalucÃa where PP control the regions. Also expect more laws to benefit tourism ( so forget any new environmental laws)
Although PP have won in many areas they will still need to make pacts with vox in places where they have no majority.
For POSE the campaign really started to unwind in the last month- the ley de Vivienda just highlighted the problem with okupas, ETA candidates in the Northern parties and then last weeks electoral fraude were the nail in the coffin. Shame in some ways because in reality Spanish under POSE has a really strong economy compared with other EU countries and they tackled the inflation crisis and covid well- however its hard to sell these less -headline grabbing achievements when you have 24/7 news that requires scandals to attract viewing numbers. Oh well...its going to be a rocking ride from now to December so expect things to get really dirty!!!
I have to say the change in law that made foreigners need to register intent to vote seems slightly undemocratic. I never received any postal information about this (with it not being a legal requirement). All that was required was the information being publicly stated on the government website- not exactly easy for foreigners to know. And all this was required to be done before end of January. Spanish citizens don't need to registered!!!

PP are now the largest party in my municipality, but they don't need a pact with VOX (who have only one councillor I am glad to say) to govern, although they will need one with one of two smaller parties.
The voter registration requirements don't seem to have worked very well at all. My husband and I received letters regarding the need to register which said we could either register online or by completing the form at the bottom of the letter and returning it. Neither of us could get the online system to work so we returned the forms by post. A few weeks before the elections I received the slip confirming my registration and giving details of which polling station to use, but my husband did not get one and when he checked online it said he was not registered. So it is not just those who weren't aware of the need to register who have been disenfranchised.

Wow....got to give Sanchez his dues....he knows that they will struggle but at least it's in the country's interest to put a new government in place as soon as possible than have 6 months of scandals and all sorts. God help us if PP don't get majority because a pact with VOX is going to cause real social unrest.

You may be right, but the result yesterday was the result of 4 years of Sanchez appeasing the minorities just to keep himself in power. The level of indignation in the rest of the country about the concessions in Catalunya and Pais Vasco plus Podemos being the tail wagging the dog came home to roost. Sanchez did not act for Spain, he acted for Sanchez. He knows that his only hope is to get a new mandate now, and not wait until November which would let PP build further on the momentum from yesterday. Whatever happens in July, even a PP absolute majority, will not stop the nationalists and anarchists doing their thing.
Opinion polls indicate a PP/Vox national government. We had a PP/Vox pact in Andalucia for four years and it mostly worked well but now we have PP governing alone and Andalucia is one of the best performing regions.

I got the letter re voter registration a few months ago. This was my first time voting and like you Lynn i completed the registration by hand and posted it back in the pre paid envelope. About a month ago I got my registration slip back with details of where i could vote etc. I took it with me to vote but they never asked or looked at it I showed my ID they checked me off their list and I posted my vote in the box, so all went well for me. The day before I was speaking with a friend who said it was their first time voting and they were keen to vote. They asked about procedure I said only really knew what I had learned from a question on the forum and added I presume we have to take the registration slip? He said oh I am registered with the Town hall no problem. I asked do you have the registration receipt ? he said what receipt. I asked had he had the letter re registering to vote? No he said he was on the padron and could vote? I said said not sure on that I thought you need to register formally your intention to vote and they sent back registration slip. I dont know if he managed to actually vote yesterday as he was going away after voting. It will be interesting to know if he was allowed. Myself I found it a straight forward enough procedure .

Podemos are a bunch of communists and Sanchez was kowtowing to them and implementing their typical damn fool policies. Sanchez wanted to be president at any cost.

Yes but unless you completed either online or by post the form showing intent to vote would your name be on the voting list? I don't think just being on the padron is sufficient or Lynn's husband would have been able to vote? I will find out next week whether this person got to vote.

Debatable at best, but I would say that Nadia Calviño has been a very good Finance Minister and probably the only one of the government who still has her integrity intact and has retained the respect of politicians on both sides. No one voted for the current coalition, that was a creation of necessity by Sanchez to be president. His only hope now is that the nationalists and extreme left can get enough votes again to keep him in a coalition again. At least in this next election, everyone knows now that they are voting for one of two coalitions.
