I must admit I avoid the really hot, midday sun here in Spain, not because of any scientific reasons, but merely because it feels uncomfortable. I also admit that on a visit to my Australian family, when I attempted to briefly sunbathe when it was hot, I had to cover up because it felt dangerous - it seemed to be a different kind of heat, a destructive kind.
One day I walked from the Sydney Opera house to the large tropical gardens and wondered at the different species of plants and birds on show. I even stopped to speak to what looked like a blue and yellow magpie. I had to stop, the funny looking bird refused to get out of my way.
I remember saying, 'What the f*** are you?'
I'm sure it replied, 'You piss off, I live here.'
I took the advice.
