I think we learn a lot more through challenging each others points of view

I find opinions on here that I wouldnt get from the people I personally know and I like that.

And yes I am like that in real life, which means 80% of people find me uncomfortable to be around, but the 20% who like it become good friends. I can't stand situations where everyone just makes pleasantries while secretly hating each other :)

I'd agree that challenge can bring out the best in people, as in a strange way can adversity. I suppose acknowledging that 80% of people find you uncomfortable to be around is to be applauded, however the flip side, as in your subsequent phrase, is that you presumably regard those 80% as potentially either hating you or you hating them? Which seems a bit OTT whether in 'real life' or a forum. Or have I over analysed?
Pleasantries. Hmm. While exchanging challenging interesting intelligent views is not necessarily a place for pleasantries in the same way as the vicar's tea party, politeness, good manners, courtesy, all of those boring old fashioned qualities, help make the world go round without at all detracting from the points people want to make.

No I dont hate anyone, I just find a lot of people boring.

Courtesy is great and important. As I get older I keep learning how to make the same point without offending people and getting angry myself. That way I can stay sane!

For Christ sake, we're in cyber space! The one thing you can't do without in cyber space is a sense of humour, and if you take yourself too seriously, and actually think cyber space is real, you could find yourself sectioned if you come across earth people.

I remember a conversation with a German rear admiral in Denia, in real life. His name was Siggie. He bragged about his pension being a ridiculous amount of Pesetas and he was buying drinks all round. He also said that he had just supplied the local police force with brand new motor bikes.

As I watched the clown stagger out of the pub, two local policeman rode up on brand new motorbikes and saluted him.

Very few people are worthless. Almost everyone has a story to tell, a tip to share or a fact to impart.

Some are witty, entertaining or good writers, so that it is a pleasure to read what they post.

Some are challenging, and debating with them is a real call to arms, but it hones your game.

One is a complete waste of space, but I have him on ignore, so that's good too.

Now that is genuinely funny.

I don't think so, they were daft looking things with high mudguards, yob's bikes.

I still wouldn't have like to spot a couple of them in my rear view mirror after a couple of vinos.

Can I ask why you keep saying this. It's fine to give Karma but I manage to do it quietly most of the time. I am truly perplexed:confused:

This is definitely cyberspace:

Life must be easy if you hate everyone you come across, and just as easy if you love everyone you come across. Us, flaky humans, fall somewhere in between and we get confused.

A fairly simple computer could probably analyse our responses, the predominant haters to the right and the predominant lovers to the left; I suspect it might split the forum into equal parts.

No, it wouldn't, the lovers would win because the haters are in the minority. They have to be, otherwise life wouldn't be worth living.

I stay clear of the haters and associate with the lovers. If the haters want to post bile, bilious stuff to upset normal people, I tick them off if I can be bothered, most of the time I just have a laugh.

Re: Would you say it to their face?

I have never understood how people "fall in love"over the internet, and by the same token have never understood how a group of words on a screen seem to cause so many problems.

People will always have disagreements and points of view, and will often voice them in strong ways, someitmes insulting others.
One of the reasons for getting heated is that when 2 people argue and say things in person, they are always interuptedby their "opponent".

That does not happen on forum, you can say what you want, without anyone butting in,

So in real lfe situations you would not be able to say it in the same way, because the other person would come backwith their view and stop you in full flow, as you would do to them.

An example is "the UK is toxic", how far would you get in airing that opinion in a face to face situation, not very far, as it would turn into a slanging match in no time.

That is part of life and as the computer is a part of life,it will happen on here and other forums too.

I will argue a point that I feel strongly about and receive the same back, but once I have left the keyboard, that is it as far as I am concerned.

So if any situation causes "stress", then is it not best to cut back or remedy the situation,ie dont read the threads that will obviously be conflictive.

The clue is usually in the title, although some fairly innocent ones can become heated too.

Are we taking thing too much to heart, I like to read a good debate and would be bored to death if there wasnt any sarcasm/irony and to be honest a few insults thrown about.

I have given and received such treatment on here on more than one occasion, and so what?

For me, most of what you say is indicative of someone who enjoys banter, enjoys discussion, knows the difference between irony and sarcasm and - here's the rub - in all probability if he wants to 'have a go' uses intelligence and wit to do it rather than out and out namecalling. That's where my 'line', as someone put it earlier on, falls. Anyone can question my viewpoint, suggest fallibilities or failings in my arguments, indeed make me feel stupid for even saying something. If they do it 'politely'. Use vocabulary intelligently rather than as pixellated ballistics. Even insults can be tempered by adjectives, clauses, blah blah into grammar and the world of English usage! As my dear late mum used to say, it's not what you say it's the way in which you say it.
(I've re-read and realised this might infer I've taken something personally and that's what the thread is about! Far from it, it's just easier to personalise to draw comparisons.)
