we wanted a villa in a remote-ish spot - tried it - didn't like it much happier in town able to walk to everything & no-one has to be taxi for the kids we always said we'd rent for up to a year while looking for somewhere to buy 6 years later we're still renting - in the same town but we've tried out various different parts of it! where we are at the moment is perfect for our current needs - but in a few years when the kids have grown up & left home I can see we'll probably want something totally different - maybe the middle-of-nowhere villa we're glad we didn't buy (yet) - we nearly did a few times but something was always not quite right |
Re: Would you move to Spain now?
Yes, both of us would still move to Spain. We are into our 7th year, but with hindsight, we would have done things differently.
Both of us having lived most of our lives close to beaches, would never contemplate being by a beach ever again, or within 30 minutes drive of a beach. In all of our travels to many countries, we always prefer to be where the locals are congregating. So, that is why we live in the south of ProvincÃa de Jaén. Yes, we have made mistakes, but we have learnt from them. We have had our ups and downs - but more ups than downs. One does become used to the bureaucratic paperwork nightmares, but a gestor can be very useful. One question we are always asked - 'Would you or do you ever want to return to the UK to live?'. Our answer is always the same - NO. Besides the weather (yes, we know it is very wet and we have snow, which is not a typical winter where we live), all the Spanish are so friendly and helpful; where in the UK, can one leave their door unlocked with the key still in it and come home to find ones home untouched or a neighbour has noticed the key, taken the key out and waited until we have returned home. Our stress levels are zero, our health has improved - neither of us have seen a doctor in 7 years (supposed being married to a nurse has helped); we eat extremely healthily, compared to our UK days. Life and living here is fantastic. |

Nothing wrong with a brits opinion or lots of their opinions but you have to decide on your own opinion.
Opinions vary. And also when in spain ask a spanish person. They know most of all.:) |

Ah! That's OK if you were told by some Brits, it must be true! :)
Just because some English person had it done it doesn't mean it is legal! Be warned, many get their fingers burnt over here but good luck none the less. |

I've learnt a lot over the years, I've also learnt (after a long time) that the Spanish way is the best way to do things in Spain. I know what I'm doing now, I have lots of contacts and if we choose to open a bar again we can get some free celebrity figures to make an appearance which the young pijo lot around here would realy go for. Spain is a very image concious country and more so in Madird and even more so in the area we're in.
:rofl::rofl: Just because some English person had it done it doesn't mean it is legal! Be warned, many get their fingers burnt over here but good luck none the less. Had enough of working in London and the UK in general and whilst I am sure there will be issues in Spain I think we will be happier there and heh at least the weather will be good. The Costa Tropical region has over 300 days of sunshine a year and you can grow tropical fruit and veg there hence its name. BRING IT ON !!!! :):):):) |

True, it has sunshine, I know the area around Almuñecar well, we have friends inland there, and visit several times a year. Don´t know the area east of Motril, it didn´t appeal to me at all. Generally the weather is good, but be aware when it rains, it rains! We were there a few years ago when the place was devastated, everywhere flooded, bridges destroyed etc, not a pretty site.

You clearly haven´t been living here on the Costa de la Luz. We´ve had torrential rain and storms for over 4 weeks now, with the exception of 2 or 3 days. Watch the Spanish news, they´re reporting heavy flooding all over Spain.
Last september/october when we lived near Alicante we had week upon week of torrential rain and storms caused by the gota fria. But it did end and Im sure the rain in your area will end too and one day the sun will come out for you day after day. From where we came from in the UK it rains a lot of the time for most of the year including torrential rain.Surprised we havent evolved with webbed feet. I dont really think you can compare the rainfall between the UK and the more southern parts of Spain. |

You seem to have this thing that everything in Spain good, UK bad. To suggest it rains every day, you need a fire even through the summer in UK is complete nonsense. Last year our CH went off early May and never came back on until mid October, you must be one very fragile being. As a photographer, I'm out and about all the time in UK, winter and summer, to listen to you, I'd never get outside the house. This last year has been worse than normal but I still have thousands of photos taken on lovely days, even in the last few weeks. Bottom line is I'm so much warmer than you, and for a lot less money :) |

Overall of course it doesn't, but the big difference is everything is bone dry, and when it rains like it can, the inevitable result is flooding. Like the other poster, I have been on the CDL and caught in rain like I have never seen before.

I dont really think you can compare the rainfall between the UK and the more southern parts of Spain. It all depends where you are. Grazalema in Cadiz province has 4 times the average rainfall of London. 2153mm/year opposed to 585mm/year. In comparison, Malaga receives 470mm/year, not far off that for London. What one cannot dispute is that there are more sunny days in the South of Spain than in the UK! |

Grazalema, Zahara etc are part of my stomping grounds when in Spain, and we have been there dozens of times, and it's never rained yet! Grazalema is supposedly the wettest place in Spain, but touch wood, it's always been good for us. Mind you, it is very green! That area in the spring is very special, the wild flowers etc, excellent. We have driven through some horrendous conditions from the coast up to Ronda area, but once there, no rain.
Nice area and enjoyed the good mountain food |
