All the expats I know who have returned to the UK are happy there with one exception, a truly awful story.

They returned because their 15-year-old daughter had fallen in with a bad crowd, young Spanish junkies.

Unfortunately the young girl returned to Spain on her own a year or so later, and the last time I saw her she was in a dreadful state, squatting in her parent's abandoned house with a whole gang of drug dealers.

The drug was that strong it pulled her back to Spain ??

I see both sides but I would assume she was young enough to be saved.

like you say awful story

I just saw this poll mentioned in another part of BE:

Its funny that they quote the 3 things that I was told do not exist are the three things that is the most reason ex-pats do not want to return for

'When it came to factors that would stop them returning home, the top three were Britain’s poor climate, high crime levels and high cost of living'

I said those 3 things in this thread and was told, the weather is not always perfect in Spain, the crime level is the same if not more and the cost of living is the same if not more.

So even though the weather can vary between plus 40c and minus 10c very occasionally in some coastal locations and quite often inland, you call that "always perfect" ?

I remember not tool long ago maybe 4 year now, and it was snowing in uk for a week and its not that, the problem is the snow stays and lingers as nobody now unless your in a city clears it, now although I went to a coastal resort in Spain, it was Jan and it was 22 Deg in daytime, so even if it does snow it does not become a major issue like UK

I know you said earlier you prefer the English Winter to a Spanish Summer, but the winters in UK are getting longer and harder, and if there is no sun to melt the snow its a proper winter not just a couple of days of fun.

Spain is vast but the people who were picked for the poll in the telegraph are unlikely to be from the not so sunny places.

It's too damned hot back here in the UK at the minute and has been for a while, for me at least.
Complete contrast to last Summer.

It's quite a few years back but I recall driving South past Barcelona one January and there was snow lying on the beach.

I drove back North ten days later and there was still bloody snow on the beach !

A total contrast to the weather a little further South in the Valencian region.

Andy, were you a bit tipsy when you wrote this? The first paragraph doesn't make a lot of sense.

We met some friends yesterday who have just arrived at their holiday home - they said exactly the same, and that the weather here atm is more pleasant than back in Lincolnshire. According to the DM we should now be experiencing a "killer heatwave". No wrecks and nobody drownded so far, alas.

Yes, odd that isn't it? On the high cost of living aspect, this is the headline item on this morning's BBC News:-

I found that report strange, the West Midlands had the fewest people who claimed to be struggling closely followed by the Northeast an area often said to be the worst in terms of employment.

So have the Geordies learnt to manage with their lot whilst the whinging southerners are still whinging

Spain is an enormous country and the weather varies all over it. Some parts are extremely hot ijn summer and cols in winter etc. Even though the UK is not so large it's weather varies enormously. here on the south coast . last year we had three days of snow - no disruption - and a mild winter. Yesterday the weather in Scotland was about 18 and wet whilst in London it was sunny and 34. People shouldn't comment on the weather in areas they know assuming it's the same everywhere else - that includes in Spain.

Spanish winters in the South are better than the UK. I remember a couple of years when it has been 22C in December, I also remember some years when it was awful, raining for months and the houses aren't warm and insulated like the UK. When you have lived there a couple of years it's all relative and winter is winter. I hate winter in the UK and I hated it in Spain too!

Saw one fat guy being interviewed on BBC today, said he only had £10 to live on when he had paid his bills...he was in the chippy:lol:
