Default Working in Gib and Living in Spain

Hi all

Myself, husband and 2 children aged 2 and 4 have decided we would like to move to Spain for more of an "outside lifestyle" this is somthing we have been thinking about for the last few years and decided if we dont do it now we never will.
Ideally my husband would like to work in Gibralter , we are in the process of getting in contact with various agences (his line of work is, Telecomms, Electrical) and plan to come over for a long weekend in a few weeks to check out different areas, we plan to rent our house out and rent a villa/apartment over there, I would love to hear from your own personal experiances on making the move, and any advice on schools, places and prices to rent, and any good job agencies. has the move lived up to your expectations.
Thanks In advance!

Hi Nicky,

I work in Gib & live in Spain.

Your hubby should have little problem finding work in Gib at this present time, employment is in abundance and I imagine Telecoms/Electrical is required almost everywhere.
Job agencies, a simple Google search "telecoms + electrical jobs in gibraltar" will give you what you are looking for.

I don't have kids but work with people who use both Gibraltar based schools and Spanish surrounding area schools, they all say both are very good.

My advice for accomodation would be to look further than La Linea.
Colleagues live in Sotogrande (towards Cadiz: mixed - Spanish, British, Portugese), Duquesa (towards Malaga: 99% British).

I live further away in Marbella and using the toll road (autopista) it takes me exactly 45 minutes by car to the border, this includes 2 tolls, one of É1.20 & another of É1.60, that's each way, per day and it almost doubles in price come the summer 'tourist season'.
So along with petrol costs it is pricey.
There is the coastal road (N340) but I try to avoid this death trap at all costs.

Another thing for your hubby to consider is the waiting times in the queues to enter into Gibraltar.
This time of year it's a 5 minutes affair but come 'tourist season' the car queue can be anything up to 1.5 hours waiting

Most people park up in La Linea and cycle or scooter or walk across which is fine so long as you can carry your work tools by these means.

Good luck and remember, don't look back, do it now or as you say...you never will.
