Winter let near Gib - any advice on areas?
Hi everyone,
Sorry I know this has been asked heaps before but i've spend days researching other posts and am still undecided so would welcome any advice.
We are looking to rent within a 40-50 minute car drive to Gibraltar for around 3/6 months from October, its just my husband, me and our small dog.
Can anyone recommend an area which isn't too quiet in the winter, but is safe, with nice restaurants and maybe a few bars not too far away, although happy to drive to them.
We are early 40's and aren't wanting mad nightlife, more nice meals but don't want a ghost town either.
Appreciate if anyone has any areas they would recommend?
Thanks
Kaci

If you stick to the established towns such as Estepona you will find life after the summer. The centre/old town has been redeveloped over the past years and is really quite a pretty place with several good restaurants as well as some that stay open in the port.
Another place that is popular with a lot of people is around Casaras and Duquesa. Guadiara is also a reasonable community but not the prettiest in the world . Steer clear of Alcaidesa - ghost town. Problem with many lets is that they are in holiday-type communities which turn into ghost towns in winter or require a car to do anything.Forget driving to bars and restaurants the Guardia Civil are quite active year round.
Just focus on real centres of population.

Take a look on a map, anywhere between Estepona and Guadiaro is OK, as mentioned before avoid Alcaidesa and also La Linea
To the West you have Los Barrios or Tarifa but avoid Algeciras.

Don't forget that many Spanish houses for rent in that area were built for summer residence, don't have insulation/cavity walls/double glazing etc and be damn cold in the winter. So pack some winter woollies or look for an older property with proper heating
