Default Will I be able to ride a scooter?

I will be moving to Spain with no driving license - and unless I suddenly get the money to do an intensive driving course there is nothing that I can do about this!
So, my question is, would I be able to ride any sort of scooter / moped? I note that young kids ride them out there and surely they aren't old enough to hold a driving license yet most people have said that I need a driving license?
Is there any sort of vehicle I will be able to ride or will it have to be walking and buses?!

at 15 they can ride a 50cc moto or drive an AIXAM 50cc car- they do have to take a test for either though

I believe at 16 (so my getting on for 16 year old tells me) they can graduate to a 125cc - but again, they have totake a test

Only an idiot would attempt to ride / drive a motor vehicle without taking lessons and / or passing a driving test.

Yep, it went up from 14 to 15 last year! I still think that's far too young but then I am of the 'older' generation!

so do I .........we've been holding out - she was 15 in Feb - tried to talk us into letting her do her test before it changed last summer...........

we'll probably let her do her test after the summer & get her a 50cc at xmas - then she'll be nearly 16

she of course wants a 125 for her 16th birthday.........................not a hope

And none of that takes into account people driving every size, from 50cc to Harleys, without any protective gear (sometimes not even a helmet). I mangled a knee bigtime coming off a small Honda when I was 16 and just wearing a skirt. Never again, and I literally wince when I see them in bare legs. Tempting, sure, but

to be fair - they do have 'driving lessons' as part of the school curriculum from a very young age - 5 iirc

the policía local go to the school & they do 'road awareness' in the playground with bikes & scooters, with traffic cones & so on

every year they do more - at some point they are taken onto the road on their bikes & by the time they leave primary school they have been to somewhere like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewbrFlCo2Ao

and hare around on go-karts - my older dd went there - my younger one went somewhere else.....the policía took them & supervised & they get a certificate (or not, of course, if they fail)

Yes, but knowing how to ride a bike and actually putting on the gear to prevent gutwrenching injury are two different things....

I hope the test has improved. When my kids took it, it was theory only!

it pretty much is just theory - but together with all the road awareness stuff they do at school I'm not TOO worried

unfortunately I know too many kids whose parents have bought them the motos but couldn't quite 'find the money' for the test, who are let loose on the roads

There is no such thing in Spain as a provisional license, so all people driving, riding MUST have passed a test, which like the UK is theory and practical. You can only learn through a driving school.

I would just add the that by pointing out that even if you have a UK provisional licence it is not valid in Spain.
