Don't they all do that, or similar? All that is doing is finding an unencrypted signal and logging on. I thought it was some magic programme that opened the red ones!

It saves the hassle of clicking on the network signal, connect / disconnect and all that crap.
Especially if you are driving around..

This one works the best that I've seen.
Load the program and it does it, or constantly checks and tries.

Simples

It saves you one click, as far as I can see, and as you can't surf whilst you are driving, I just fail to see the value of it.

It has no monetary value, as it's free. The radar blips as you drive about, you know - with it sitting on the passenger seat or as a passenger..

I can see that you are being quite the negative so I will duck out of this thread before you annoy. I really don't know what has happened to the simple age old art of nice conversations.

All the best, not

Go to Carrefour and look at their Belkin range, you want the Wireless G+ mimo or better still the next one up N1 mimo which has a wider range. I had the G+ mimo it cost about 25 euro about a year ago, the range was up to 300m. I wasn't able to have an internet connection where I lived and the Belkin made a huge difference. It comes with a cd and is simple to install. You may also need a usb extension lead but don't buy the usb extension lead from Carrefour as they are around 7 euro, I bought mine from a computer shop for 2 euro.

I'm assuming that this picks up signals that your laptop wouldn't, does that then give a usable signal? Is it strong enough to give a good stable connection?
I've got an excellent connection, but if I have tried any around me that my computer detects they are rarely of sufficient strength as to be much use.

Digdug,

In answer to ur original question, 5km seems optimistic but not impossible.
For that range I would expect to purchase a parabolic antenna. I know of one with a 2.5km range. Point it in the opposite direction and u would get 5km. Obviously, this would need to be outdoors.

There are other less powerful antennas (indoor and outdoor) available which should be sufficient for most needs. they are usually used in conjunction with a USB adapter and work well.

the spanish are very much into this technology. Constantly, I am monitoring windows, roofs, etc and it's simply amazing at the array of hardware about. It all goes unnoticed to the unwary. The devices can be purchased online or in good computer shops. Media Markt might even stock them. They are totally legal to purchase. Their legality is dependent on what u use it for!!

They can be used to transmit or receive signals. For instance, a typical use might be to access ur home signal, whilst ur on the beach a few hundred metres away.

One final note, I prefer not to attract attention, so mine is indoors. If I see one on ur roof, I'll know exactly what ur doing, lol.

I hope this gives a brief insight into the technology, as I found the whole arena quite confusing when I first started.

John.

No Wifi signal is secure in a total sense, Although a few people have been caught parked outside houses hacking Wifi Signals. Best thing you can do with a Wifi Router Access point is 1 Switch it Off 2 If you have to have it on then use the Mac Address tables for access.

Enabling MAC address in the WIFI Setup is the way to go..
Especially when you prioritize the most important MAC address for bandwidth

cheers john, makes sense - i'll have a look around for one. i have seen a plug in dongle type thing online which has an antenna attached to it, that claims to boost the signal no end. i was thinking this or similar might work for me, as we have free wifi zones in town, but theyre just too far from me to connect.
any idea what a parabolic antenna should cost, and more to the point, what the hell would i be asking for in spanish
