http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/p...HIC-usage.html

It has been quite common for many years to have taxi drivers and hotel reception staff getting backhanders to send supposedly ill foreigners to particular hospitals for treatment irrespective of nationality and country where this happens.

Most expats living here will be savvy about where they go etc, but the holiday makers to any country have absolutely no idea, just so long as they get treated - usually for injuries caused by drink, drugs or just over enthusiasm whilst on holiday.

I do not see this as a Spain problem, a PIGS problem, it happens in all countries around the world. Although I personally have no experience I believe it happens in the UK, especially London to visitors there.

So please lets not make it look like Spain is the trendsetter.

“Spain is turning into the next Germany”

What utter cr*p.

Where exactly is Spain's Mittelstand then? This is the same bureacratic Spain with its rigid labour laws and real estate debts we're talking about right? Is this the same Spain the IMF recently voiced concerns about regarding its ability to meet its lines of credit?

Spain's GDP fell 1.8% Q4 2012.

The only reason Spain has a competitive export advantage over the rest of EU is that high unemployment drives cheap labour.

"we could observe Bangladesh's average wage cost of one dollar a day and conclude that it will overtake Germany in the export league table" - Prof M Chowdury, Brunel University

Spain is a great country to live in but an export powerhouse like Germany - Prof Ignacio is deluded. When a Germany analyst (not a trumpet blowing Spanish one) confers this prediction, I'll believe it.

Doubt it...read the spanish forums, they have it all sussed. They say all you need for treatment in London hospitals is a European passport:huh:

I see some Spanish public hospitals have started renting out rooms to private patients to raise cash.
Not only that , but they're charging their visitors rent just for having a comfy chair to sit in during visiting hours.

Apparently the RyanAir philosophy is spreading.

Not cheap either, if you want a bed! Already some are charging for ambulances, crutches, wheelchairs etc.

Some Catalan public hospitals charging for individual rooms. They are charging patients for individual rooms and even for relatives to spend the night. €40 a night for relatives to sleep in the armchair next to the patient, or €70 a night if you want to sleep in a bed.

So, no sensible comment on how exports can lift Spain out of the crisis (or not)? Or even that the UK should or shouldn't follow suit? Nope, the tag team realise that even they can't hide this positive news of Spanish export success , so divert the thread. Carry on lemon-suckers

Shouldn't there be a law that prevents anyone from posting any less-than-complimentary statement on any Spanish forum? I'd have to believe would solve our "crisis", wouldn't it?

Another strawman argument (ie no-one suggested that). Perhaps you can find an export field that Spain is poor at? - shouldn't be too hard, no country lacks blind spots. Actually, a good point is that Spain should have done all this years back - and it's because they concentrated on making money out of the construction boom, that they failed to do so then.

Well, according to "facts" which you yourself submitted as evidence, it seems there are quite a few.

Oh dear, yet another political propaganda exercise collapsed around your ears Stevie.

Try reading the joke page and lighten up for Christ's sake.

Another ad-hom from you Dick. Pity, I'd seen a couple of posts where you'd actually tried to address the topic instead of your patronising drivel. Still, a better average than of late.
