..about their status here in Spain.?
I have lost count of people who tell you they owned a big 6 bed house in an exclusive area of the UK, but are now living 4 to a 2 bed apartment on an urbanisation , and then later I come to find out they actually lived in a 2 bed terrace in an inner city estate, or the people who tell you they own their house here in Spain when actually it transpires they are renting, and couldn't afford to buy a house.
I couldn't care less about people status, they could live in a tent with a couple of goats for I care, or even be an exccentric millionaire and rent space under a Rio segura bridge. I have no interest in how much money a person may have or not, but I hate lies. I understand people trying to re-invent themselves as part of their new life, but when we're all trying to make new friends in our adopted country, it comes as a blow to find out that your new friendship has started out on a rock of lies.
Sorry guys just having a little rant !!

I've been here for 4 years now . and yes I've heard the former a few times myself...actually more than I'd like to recall, but I was just reeling with the knowledge that someone I thought of as a good friend for the last 3 years, has lied to me about their home.
Over the years they've told long winded stories about their buying process and all the difficulties they had to overcome in Spain to buy it, and now I have learned they have never owned it, and only rented. In fact they've just defaulted on the rent, and had to leave pdq, and move into another rental.
As I say, who cares, but liars and me don't mix, and sadly there goes another friendship!!

Spain is a new begining for lots of people from all walks of life. Some people are in Spain becuse they have runaway, ever heard of the 'Costa del crime'?
Do you think people there who are criminals in their country of origin tell the truth about who they are and where they come from?
Many married couples runaway to Spain, not necessarily with their spouse, but someone else's! Bit of a conversation stoper, we've dumped our spouses and children and run off together. Would you want them as firends?
Some people like to guild the lilly because it makes them feel better, and others lie inorder to be accepted by people they think are better than they are.
There are countless other reasons for people to lie. You are right that a freindship built on lies has a very rocky foundation.
I myself do not lie about who I am and where I am from, but I am lucky, I am a self made minionaire, with a very attractive wife who is 25 years younger than me and loves me for who I am. (no sorry, that was a lie)
I am just Mr average, as most people are, and am lucky to have a little place in the sun.
I hope you soon find a new freind who is honest and trustworthy to replace the one you thought you had.

Like the others ...I detest liars.....and unfortunately have been taken in my a few ....a coupler that we thought we liked, turned out to lie all the time, so we have just drifted away...not fallen out as it's not worth it but just don't choose to see them & but my son really misses their little lads....it's just not fair on the children. Whats the point of all the lies ????

We have met absolutely fab people though, like minded...what you see is what you get...
There are all walks of life here...and we were told to choose our friends wisely...which we have and have only met one couple that were not who we seemed.
Chin up chick...there are loads of lovely people out there but they'll be liars all the time unfortunately not all people are happy with their own lot ...sad really.

Bless you all xxx
I agree that we are all here for our own reasons, me simply because I felt that life was passing me by in the UK, and I wanted a shot at living a different way of life, and like you #lic, just an ordinary person, who find herself very fortunate to have the chance to live here, and I never forget it.
I have an ordinary 3 bed suburban home in the shires in the uk, and fortunate that I can afford to hold onto it as well as my home here in Spain, so that if I found I needed to return ''home'' (touch wood I don't) then I can, and would hopefully never expect others to believe that I though I was any better than them by making up exotic stories of my background.
#Mrs Eddie, yes I'm of the same mind set as you, life is too short to have fallings out with people, but distancing myself from these people is the way I go also. Very sad when you/one believes we've been lucky enough to find good decent friends, to get a kick in the gut again and again....however onwards and upwards, mebbe one day I'll find honest decent people who aren't running away from the law, dogy backgrounds, or themselves.
Thanks ''oddities'', mrs E, and lic....I'm cheered up now from your lovely posts

If you were mates and that friendship wasn't based on status etc - why bother about their lies (I'd say fibs really, nobody was hurt by their untruths afterall)
Their "romantic" nature goes to making them who they are - give them a call - call them a pair of fools, ask them why, ask them round for a meal and have a laugh about it.

leigh, yes you're correct that the friendship wasn't based on status, however all my friendships are based on trust, and forever more I would be wondering if everything they were telling me was the truth, and sadly that's not how I am comfortable in a friendship, but bless you I understand what you're saying.

Well I've never made any secret of the fact that I live in a Gypsy ghetto.....and quite a few of my friends (both Gitano and Spanish) have been in prison since I've been here!
But I tell you one thing.....this is the best place and the safest place I've ever lived! If Eastern European gangs came here looking to gas people in their houses they'd take one look at the Barrio and get out of town quick!

My dad always said he would sooner have a thief than a liar ,as you know where you are with a thief .
The biggest lie people tell in Spain is that they are.... "Builders"
, well if they are the real thing then i must be a "Cowboy"
.
