LOL Trubrit... I do wonder why I am typing away when I should be doing other things. I had a bout of insomnia last night when I woke up after an overexciting dream and did the washing up then logged on to try and get sleepy again. Remembered a fellow regular saying how she was so fed up with all the whingers knocking Britain on the forum. She chose to leave her seaside town only because of the short summers. Does her best to integrate but misses Britain and family. I think it is a bit like discussing relationships; when you have a happy and balance one and one's friends are being disappointed all over the place, then one wants to discuss in the hopes of them being able to find some sort of equilibrium. Knowledge is power...

Understand what your saying, but not everyone has the same strenght to resist.Personally I have learnt that material posessions dont neccessarily bring happiness, and dont really care what anyone else thinks. You mentioned an investment property and a boat, how comes youve bought those if material possesions are not important to you:) .

I want my children to grow up here, less commercialised, more relaxed, more healthy, more fun.

the main thing I miss apart from friends and family - our house! great house, beautifully restored and we still own it - its our pension fund as we couldnt afford to pay into a pension fund privately.

but you mentioned Suffolk - my dh is from there, I visited many times UGH!! not my bag at all - but thats what makes the world great .... each to their own, otherwise we'd all be wanting to live in the same space!!

You have proved my point.....you wanted a whole new lifestyle which is dependent on many factors, and didn't move JUST because you were discontented with Britain. In an ideal world I would live by a river with my own jetty with my boat moored to it, a large town with plenty of cultural activities, some nice but not necessarily fancy restaurants with proper cooking, an interesting part time job, good health and nice friends and neighbours. Enough money to not have to worry, an interesting love life and no trace of senile dementia. And the sun and warm weather for at least 8 months of the year.
Well Vancouver has been suggested to me but I don't believe I would get the sun. So far Chiclana seems to fit the bill.. everything except the boat on the jetty, but the old harbour is charming, and I am working on the mooring. Just need to spend the 8 months there !!
And I bet you never sat by the reed beds in Aldeburgh listening to the music wafting over from the concert hall in Snape ?? That's the Suffolk I meant..just like rural Essex is a world away from Basildon and Romford...

absoloutely - we left the UK because we had an existence not a life - here we have a life. and as I said in my first post on this thread there are many things I love about the UK .... but they're not enough to make me want to stay.

and suffolk - Oh lord! tiny village with a watermill, bloody boring parochial people who's idea of food was a mixed grill and world experiences were hiking the mountains of scotland! it was like being trapped in the Darling Buds of May!!!

give me a cosmopolitan island any day of the week!:D

I blame the UK press. All they want to do is stir things up creating negativity because that is what sells their papers. If it isn´t true - make it up because everyone will believe them. "It must be true I read it in the Daily Mail". So everyone gets on the band wagon. Bad things have always happened. I can remember 25 plus years ago a man going beserk with a gun and shooting a female casino operator and a police officer and that is in a quiet town in Devon.
I can also remember long dole queues and interest rates being at 15% and this wasn´t under the present government. I do miss the Uk in Spring though with all the daffodils and bluebells. I also miss the theatre, but, am looking forward to a long hot summer by the pool and on Barossa beach, and eating fresh langoustines washed down by copious amounts of vino with friends. Good and bad in most countries except perhaps North Korea.

Why wouldn't you knock the YUK  .....who would want to live there full stop, it's the biggest sh1thole left unless you go to Africa, but then there again you are in Africa when you are in the YUK.

I would never ever go back there to live for any reason, when I have to go back there to visit relatives I realise why I left, and I am glad I did many many years ago

Just look at the amount of crimes that are being comitted, and not just little things, just look at South London, it gets worse and worse street gangs black, white.
It is like going back since time immerorial, when we were all backward, and now it has all happened all over again, what is going wrong with the place :(

I cannot think of a worse place to live, :o .... compared to Spain we live in absolute paradise

Keep well clear of the YUK:thumbup:

Cortez I mean material possessions in order to keep up with one's peers...my sailing friends love sailing with me but some wince at the state of my car...I point out that I cannot afford a boat and a decent car, and they now have to bring the food and booze when they come sailing. My investment property is because I wouldn't have much of a pension. I got annoyed when my tenant said she expected I would be driving a BMW and own several in the block!! I mean, I subsidise the damned thing for my old age. Being non materialistic does not in my book mean no possessions.. I am not a 70's hippy. It means trying to realise the true worth of material objects. We have no TV or DVD player in Spain, but are trying to afford a wonderful old olive tree. I may no longer be able to afford my boat in a few years, but I will look back at the time I owned it with pleasure. Advertising, peer pressure, family....they all want you to conform... be brave , stand back, do your own thing and be stronger and happier for it.

Well I live down the road from Peckham. yes it is not good what's happening there. However the Rye is filled with picnicers in the summer, all the old shops are gone in the small centre and the fancy estate agents are increasing, more trees are being planted, and in spite of the shootings property prices are rocketing. I wouldn't choose to live in Preston, Birmingham or Brighton, nor rub shoulders with the Russian mafia in Eaton Square (even if I won the lottery), but I wouldn't condemn the whole of Britain. I shall comment further after I have visited my sister who is in the process of moving from the Midlands to the Isle of Skye.

Aaaah, now I understand didnt mean to infer you were a 70's hippy, just that everyone I know who bought an investment proerty was in it for the capital growth and planned on buying more to get rich!
It would appear however we are at cross purposes here,my outlook on materialism is much the same as yours!:)

It's interesting, what you say of world experiences, I'd wager, if more people took the time to actually get to know the UK, I think they'd be surprised what a fantastically varied country it is, and surely the world includes "home" as well? So as they say don't knock it till you've tried it.
I'd hate to live in the Carribbean, (if it's so popular with the Yanks, it can't have any class), and probably exploits those less fortunates of it's citizens , I wouldn't be surprised if people are still living in near third world poverty, only a couple of miles from where some tycoon is sunning his secretary's ass in a million pound holiday home. I personally wouldn't want any part of a society like that.
