dont highlight these cases as all countries have the same problems - ALL - and to the same level or worse. if you think the rest of the world is different you will get a rude wake up call.

US,South Africa probably a lot worse from what I've heard!People the world over are the same!I think the main reason people emigrate are structural,as cost of living,schooling,weather etc.
Just my opinion,Im still young!:D

so were the Hindley Bradey murders, babes in the wood, yorkshire ripper, dennis neilsen, et etc

I could go on. All shocking - but we didnt all shout and scream and flee the country.

admit it - its a combination of things not just the easy "crime is so bad" get out phrase

Of course the children getting shot is a shocker... but so was Dunblane, and that happened in a presumably until then crime free town.
Island mom doesn't say where she is. However she points out all the things she considered essential for her kids in the Uk, then lists a few non essentials, then says she is now living in an area where she can give her kids the schooling of her choice, but in order to do so lives without things she considered essential in the UK. I don't know her circumstances but surely she could have lived as frugally as she did in the UK to give her kids what she deemed necessary ?? Not a criticism , just an observation.
I don't think Britain is perfect, far from it. If I ever drive past another restaurant with a Brake Bros van outside...:eek:
Frankly I yearn for the days when anyone other than those with an RP accent were barred from the media, women wore hats and gloves, we didn't know the intimate details of the sex lives of the Royals, homosexuals were put in prison, incest and child abuse was well concealed within family life and the miserable little recipients were not paid compensation everytime they complained, and only the select few had a TV. Bring back Blacks being called darkies and even n*****s, backstreet abortions, and the Magdalen laundries. And refuse entry to people who fear for their lives as Britain did to the Romanovs so they all get shot and don't come over to claim handouts.
Then we can all live in Britain of the good old days.:D :D :D

OK, time for some facts, and not what you read in the Daily Gobshite.

Murders per Capita

UK = 0.0140633/1000, world ranking 46th worst.
Spain = 0.0122456/1000, world ranking 48th worst.

Round both these to the nearest meaningful number and it's ZERO/1000. I admit no comfort if it's you, but not really worth worrying over. In my own humble opinion of course.

Not to worry you all of course, but for every million people, Spain manages to slaughter 128 (0.128/1000) of them on the roads every year, in the super safe UK we only manage a measley 61 (0.061/1000).
If you want to worry about something try that and come home quick - but be bloody careful on the road to the airport!!

not taken as a critism at all - didnt want to live frugally, after working 6 days a week 12 hours a day, having to put the kids in day care, no holidays abroad as were having to save, no tv we wanted, no school we wanted, no updating the car we needed, etc etc.. basically working like a dog and not ENJOYING anything we wanted to enjoy or spend any money - coz there was NO money left. thats not a life - its an existence and we hated that!

here we do live without things I consider less important - but we have the things available to us we do consider important .... great school, I am a stay at home mum, we travel often, private excellent medical healthcare, wonderful daily lifestyle, more money, dh loves his job, we are MUCH healthier, we are much happier - and you cant beat that!:thumbup:

Thats what its all about.:) Also the UK is a much more materialistic society so there is more peer pressure to consume,in Spain thats not the case,life is more people orientated,as in your judged by who you are,not by what you have:) .

I take your point Island Mom... but surely you could have done the same somewhere in Britain??? Of course you would never have the sun... but if one is prepared to make the move abroad, then surely it would have been possible to find the same in Britain?? Perhaps Orkney ? Or Wales? or Suffolk ?? A friend who qualified late in life as a solicitor, cleaning floors and working in pubs to pay for it, eventually threw in the challenge of life in Hackney and went to Wales. Idyllic on the surface, she had to learn to deal with cockle shell wars, milk quotas as alimony agreements, and yes, nasty child abuse. However a traffic jam is three cars trying to negotiate a roundabout, she now has her small yacht, and a decent pension. The point I am making is that it is possible to make these changes in Britain...if one also wants the sun, the sea and the sangria then great...
I look forward to the day when I can spend an entire summer at the house in Spain drinking caipirinhas at a chiringita, and living up to my name.
But I shall miss many many things about Britain when I do, and will look forward to my visits back.

Why do so many people on here continue to knock Britain?? Thousands of people are flocking to work there... yes they are not all coming for free handouts. There are problems yes, but Britain has a greater degree of multi culturalism than any other European city so this is to be expected. A country doesn't gain the wealth of a colonial past without having to reciprocate in years to come.
Live in Spain, France, the USA or anywhere else you choose to head...because you want the sun, the landscape, the culture, but please don't bore the people you meet by telling them how awful Britain is...it reflects on your own inability to live here, and not necessarily on the true state of the country.

good post :)

i have no idea except to say they are immature people with small minds who cannot see the whole picture. if life was so good in their new country why are they spending time on a forum whinging, probably because they've always been whingers and always will be :p perhaps they couldn't make a success of life in the uk for whatever reason, who knows and really who gives a flying fu(k .....best solution poollounger don't reply to them nor open their threads, let them whinge away :D

But cortez that's down to you... you can resist....you do NOT need to conform and be pressured.. Just learn to say no. A very well off friend of mine still rides her bicycle everywhere, shops at Oxfam, never gave her children an anti-biotic if she could help it, reused to patronise anything with Disney involved, is wildly eccentric and is seemingly happy.
I have a boat yes, and an investment property, yes, but have a 10 year old car, that I hope will last another 5. When times were lean I gave up a car for three years and took to my bicycle.. The pressure can be enormous only if you let it. I have friends who own four properties and worry that they will soon be living on a pension of 40,000 a year !!!

no I dont believe we could have done it elsewhere in Britain - the jobs we had are VERY specific and limited, plus I adore where we live, its in my heart and my parents grew up out here and I spent alot of my childhood here so its a whole life we have moved for. I want my children to grow up here, less commercialised, more relaxed, more healthy, more fun.

the main thing I miss apart from friends and family - our house! great house, beautifully restored and we still own it - its our pension fund as we couldnt afford to pay into a pension fund privately.

but you mentioned Suffolk - my dh is from there, I visited many times UGH!! not my bag at all - but thats what makes the world great .... each to their own, otherwise we'd all be wanting to live in the same space!!
