Re: Why disturb them?
Wouldn't worry about it,... even the Irish use the English version now.
McAlpine's Fusiliers.
'Twas in the year of thirty-nine, when the sky was full of lead
When Hitler was heading for Poland and Paddy for Holyhead
Come all you pincher laddies and you long distance men
Don't ever work for McAlpine, for Wimpy, nor John Lang
For you'll stand behind the mixer, till your skin has turned to tan
And they'll good of you Paddy, with your boat fair in your hand
Oh, the ""crack"" was good in Cricklewood and the wouldn't leave the Crown
With glasses flyin' and Biddy's cryin', sure Paddy was goin' to town
Oh mother dear I'm over here, I'll never coming back
What keeps me here is rake of beer the ladies and the ""crack""
I come from the County Kerry, the lands of eggs and bacon
And if you think I'll eat your fish and chips, Bejasus, you're mistaken

I preferred Kipling's version, demonstrating that the government only ever respected the soldiers when they needed cannon fodder.
'Oh it's Tommy this, and it's Tommy that, and it's Tommy go away.
But it's Hello Mr Atkins, when the band begins to play.'

I find religious people to be unintelligent, boring, annoying and hypocritical.
When I die, if I have to go somewhere, I want it to be wherever they are not going!

Google gives over a million hits for "craic" as opposed to 15,000 for "crack, not that it matters of course, we'll know what they mean, whatever version they use.

Re: Why disturb them?
I wonder if you can be addicted to craic as well as crack? They can’t be related because the crackheads I’ve come across just loll about with a daft smile on their face and don’t say much. They’re no trouble to anyone until it wears off, and then they go on the rampage to get money to buy more.
If they were handed the rocks for free at the dole office, crime would drop dramatically, didn’t some ex-Labour minister suggest it just the other day?
I’m inclined to agree, we can’t cure them once they get to that stage, so why not give them the stuff for free? Mass-produced in a government lab it would cost a lot less than banging them up and paying compensation to their victims.

Re: Why disturb them?
The truly tragic thing is they seem so happy to hand over their ability to reason critically in return for what? The ability to believe in someone else's imaginary friend?
Tragic.

Holland’s population hasn’t turned into junkies because you can legally smoke Cannabis in certain places.
I don’t think there would be less addicts, but nor would there be any more.

Re: Why disturb them?
"The Netherlands' vaunted drug policies -- legalizing the public sale of cannabis products in the now-famous coffee shops and adopting a generally lenient attitude toward drug use -- have turned the country into the narcotics capital of western Europe. Dutch cops admit that Holland is to synthetic drugs what Colombia is to cocaine. Not only is Holland's increasingly potent marijuana not staying in the legal coffee shops, but its illegal export brings in far more money than that traditional Dutch export, tulips. Meanwhile, drug addiction has tripled. There are no easy answers to drugs, but naive Dutch legislators have made a hash of drug policy."
There are reports that say different, which to believe?

Re: Why disturb them?
We lost the war on drugs the day we made them illegal.
There will always be a % of any population that will use intoxicants. We see this in the natural world too.
It is a fact of life and needs to be addressed.
We already have the relevant laws in place, just use the same ones for booze and fags, just change them to include all intoxicants.
Holland has always had a very adult approach to sex education, porn and drugs. It also has legal abortion, and I was always told that they have less teen pregnancy than the UK, their teens use less drugs and take them later in life, there is less sex crime and per 1,000 head of population less abortions than anywhere else. Recent immigration has skewed the figures I think, but the lesson is there.
Prohibition increases useage, enriches criminals and boosts crime.
Legalisation will not be problem free, but I'm willing to bet the problems will be reduced.

.
Spain also has very liberal laws on these things. The age of consent is 12, prostitution is legal (but pimping is not) and so is smoking cannibis.
And they have very low teenage pregnancy rates, but along with the UK, they are the highest drug takers in Europe!

Re: Why disturb them?
A tiny bit off topic, smoking pot......smoking cigs.
Where will they go to smoke it?
A chap I chat to over the internet from Yorkshire area in the Uk says you can't even smoke in any works vehicles now and he has also had a letter from the council saying they will be banning smoking in all their council houses. How the hell are they gonna police that one?

Apparently plans are in progress to fit all council houses with CCTV systems.

Apart from easy availability for geographical reasons, there must be other causes and I don’t suppose high youth unemployment is too far down the list. Or the simple lack of money. Young Madrilenos order a pint glass containing a quarter bottle of DYC whisky filled up with coke, put four straws in it and light up their spliffs. It can last four of them all night and it’s cheap.
