From what I can tell by the news, they didn't work. 
One of the pictures in the article is from a Wikipedia page so maybe they don't let you smash up computers after all, pity.

No, it says in the article that "this concept is already in other Spanish Cities" so not "only in Benidorm"

They have them in Japan too, probably everywhere in the world by now and if anything I think Benidorm is late to the party!
