Where In Valencia?
Hi all, am moving out to Spain by the summer months, have been out and looked around the country quite a lot and have decided that Valencia is the area we prefer the most. As we are a lover of motorbikes the race circuit is a bonus. However our dilema is whereabouts in Valencia to settle, we have a daughter of 8 so need a good school and a boy of 17 who wants to work with animals, we are hoping to maybe run a B & B. Any help and advice is most welcome:thumbsup:

Re: Where In Valencia?
We are moving to an area called Llacuna, which is near Villalonga, very nice, quiet but not too far from Gandia , or beaches, good schools, we are sending our youngest to the local Spanish school which is very nice. We drove around quite a lot but really liked this area most.:)

Re: Where In Valencia?
Oliva Gandia Denia areas well worth looking at

Re: Where In Valencia?
Since 2003, we've lived in the outskirts of Valencia, between La Pobla de Vallbona and Bétera.
Great location, very quiet, surrounded by farms and orange groves, yet less than ten minutes drive to a big shopping mall (Carrefour, Lidl, McDonalds etc.), Metro station for Valencia (30 minutes, just over a Euro) schools, medical centre etc. Nearest beaches about 30 minutes drive, also there are beaches in the city accessible by Metro. Not many Brits here, 17 in a town of 20,000. |

This is a really nice place, central in Oliva, and easy to get to the surrounding areas via the N332 North & South |

Luckily the village shop had C.C.T.V footage of the bloke buying a can of drink just before he attacked my son, but, typical of the British system, he just got a 'ticking off' even though he'd be warned before for a similar crime. A girl friend of his only a few months ago, when walking home from the bus stop, was nearly dragged into the back of a transit van by 2 men, she was 16 at the time, and has been so traumatised by it can't remember most of the details, it was however heard by her Mum, who was talking to her on her phone at the time. What a delightful place to live. Give me a one way ticket out of here!! |

Oh Dear you have been away from Blighty a long time haven't you! That is a walk in the park compaired to the type of crime going on here, one of the reasons we're leaving, although I know having things like you know of happening in Oliva is very upsetting for the people concerned, give me that over the sort of violence going on in the U.K.

Re: Where In Valencia?
Have booked flights for 7th June for a week, am staying in Oliva so hoping for a good look around. Just hope i dont get lost coming from the airport as i am relying on my 18yr old son to navigate for me:huh: I am hoping to look at some schools whilst over to try and reassure my 8yr old daughter that she will be fine. she is very outgoing and sociable but obviously sad about leaving her current friends. will let you know how it goes, thanks for all the help:thumbsup:

Re: Where In Valencia?
HI me again, can anyone tell me how to find a list of schools in the oliva and surrounding areas? I keep looking on google and am not finding very much. I wanted to try and look at some whilst I'm out, as I'm told if its a state school I will need to live in the catchment area.

Oliva is quite a big place and there will be a few schools - it will all depend in where you will be living ? and generally children will go to the closest school - which will be a lot easier if they are not staying for lunch as they have a 3 hour break (12-3, October-May) so if you have to drive them to school you are forever going back and forth There are lots of nice villages around that area ( I live just 5 mins from Gandia - have been here for 4 years ) have a good trip |

I'd wander around, that's how we started to get to know where the schools were. My children will both go to Santa Anna.....in the Old Town. On the Paseo (the main street) there is Rebollet, Luis Vives (excuse spelling), and a couple more that I'm not sure of the names. On the way to the beach...the new paseo, there is a new school ..it's opposite the football ground. But it will depend on where you live as to which school the children go to....and Oliva is bigger than I first thought. Anyway..good luck... |

I recommend getting directions from Mitzy if you are driving down from Valencia. It is an easy route once you know it. I tried to do it by logic and instinct and it took me 3 hours instead of one, to get from Valencia to Denia. Beautiful scenery though.:)

we did that.......it's how we found Ontinyent!
We can walk to most parts of the town from where we are based (La Pedrera). It takes just five minutes to get to Plaza Jaime which comes alive in the early evening - very Spanish/S American area. Didn't bother trying to "sell it" to you as I assume you know Denia fairly well. |

Hi me again, has anyone got any suggestions on areas to visit whilst over in June? I want my kids to see the real Spain, not just the touristy areas, if they are going to live there they need to see what the area is all about. :D

Has your house got mains electricity? Could be mistaken but seem to remember there was a problem with Iberdrola's supply to the area.

Re: Where In Valencia?
something to bear in mind is that in the valencia province most schools have first language "valenciano" which is totally different to spanish. So check on the schools. In Alfaz del Pi where we are ( near Altea and Benidorm) each year has about 4 classes of Spanish as first language and 1 or 2 valenciano(its a big school! with alot of foreigners) But most small village schools cant offer that.

Re: Where In Valencia?
Hi all, well bags are packed and currency in purse, only two days to go, have arranged to meet an estate agent in Villalonga on friday for a good look around, (hopefully, as long as I dont get lost on the way). Am flying into Alicante in the afternoon so all being well, we should arrive at Oliva in time for tea. Have looked at loads of maps, all as clear as mud, I am so used to being the passenger and not the driver, but hey ho in for a penny in for a pound!! Should be fun! How hot is it at the moment, do I need a cardi? Can't wait:thumbup:

Re: WHERE IN VALENCIA?
Hi all, am back from Oliva, weather was lovely even the day of rain was great. Went and drove around a lot of places, managed 725km in one week, got lost a few times and shouted at my son ( said he was a fantastic map reader, huh! I don't think so!) Met with some lovely people who showed me around Villalonga and the mountains, have seen a fantastic property and now have a million and one questions to be answered on the property. The scenery is fantastic even my 18yr old was gobsmacked by some of it.
Am waiting now to hear back on the property and if all goes ok will go back out and have another look around. Drove to Barx as suggested by Mitzyboy, everywhere appears so lovely. Had sold my property in UK for 2nd time over the weekend and then the next buyers down have lost there buyers. Its very disheartening, it feels like one step forward and five back. Will keep you up to date, good wishes to all x:thumbup: |
