Find a local whom you can trust, who knows how the system works. Invaluable. Will save you €1000's.

Check everything about the property you want to buy. Check the "official" status of the property with the local council (don't take anybody's word for it - get it from the local ajuntamento). If you don't, then don't be surprised to later hear something like "oh, you need water? and electricity too? That's going to be expensive".

FIRSTLY become fluent in the local language. It's really your best defence.
All the rest was valuable, and you might need to be on your mettle prior to buying/renting , but the single most important thing is the language.

Hi Anne,
We have been here 8 years, no real regrets, we work here and it is very hard to earn a living, but as that is not an issue for you, I think buying in Spain is a good idea.

North costa blanca can be a bit expensive, we live just inland of Alicante and have seen prices fall alot, loads of detatched houses under 200000 €

It may be worth looking at bank websites, most have property for sale.

But please don't buy until you've rented in at least two places. Please. Think about it. It's different if you know the housing market is buoyant. It's not. Or if you can afford to get stuck somewhere and wait for the stagnation to pass. Maybe you can't. Or you are absolutely confident about knowing what you want even if you don't know the area.
Just rent first is all!
