I understand that EU grants are payable to these 'farmers', living on the edge of the countryside I also notice quite a lot of movement of stock from one small holding to another. Far be it for me to make accusations but could these guys be 'stocking up' for an EU grant inspection?
No, having personal experience of this myself and the amount of scrutiny involved to prevent it, I would say it varies between extremely rare and non existent in the UK.

Can't speak for the rest of Europe mind and countries like Spain, Italy and Greece.

Know what I mean like ?

Good point RM.
Also the "Fair trade" markets are kept at bay in favour of us having to spend more for our "home grown".
I can't remember the full details (though I will post them if you wish), but the farm trade is akin to a monopoly with fixed prices across the board.
Something similar to what the hire car firms were recently slammed to rights for in Spain.
However, in the case of the farmers, they have full government support! A legal racket if you like.

As for being able to afford to eat. Yes indeed and with more change in the pocket.

The bottom line is that we all eat too much meat.

I would refine this argument and say we all eat too much crap meat.

Too much processed crap. One decent steak or Chicken Breast every couple of days is sufficient protein for most people. Much better than eating processed ham, sausage rolls, pies etc.
