Some folk really need to get a life.
Is tarring and feathering typical of the Spanish way of life then?

What? British people complain all the time about the "Muslims" for example living in their own areas in the UK and living a very un-British way of life. People on here moan about it all the time. They are the same people who live a very British life in Spain

Imagine if the Asian community critized those who spoke English and ate English food the way that British people criticize those on here who like and live in Spanish culture

I think what amazes me about British people on here and British culture in general in that is is so hypocritical. It is so incredibly racist and based on an outdated culture of empire i.e. British culture triumphs everything else. But at the same time everyone is aware that racism is wrong so they do their best to cover it up, but it keeps peeping out under the carpet.

Even the term plastic Spaniard is so offensive and kind of racist. It infers that people who want to be part of a different culture are somehow inferior. It is based on ignorance, fear and the sense of needing to feel superior.

And I find it remarkable that it is British people who choose to leave their country who behave like that. Didn't you leave Britain for a reason? If only the weather has changed then your life must be so superficial

Pakistani gangsters/drug dealers hide behind their supposed 'faith', and the UK police fall for it time after time, don't forget that the hatred of scum bags should have no boundaries. Ordinary Asian folk get tarred with the same brush by idiots, but to be fair they do very little to help the authorities, like will always side with like I suppose.

Good point why do Brits move to Spain, Portugal etc , they must think that there is something " Better " than the UK in these countries .
If the UK is perfect in every way why leave ?
When I hear Expats running down the country they live in I am sometimes tempted to ask, " What the hell are you doing here if you dislike it so much ".
When they call someone a " plastic Spaniard etc " are they demonstratng a sense of inferiority in that they do not have the knowledge of confidence that the other person has ?

The dreaded integration question yet again. It is surely a question of personal choice.

On one extreme you can even get Spanish nationality, it's an extremely easy process and it's free.

On the other hand you can live in Spain for 30 years without ever learning a word of Spanish or eating chorizo sausages.

And there is no comparison with foreign immigrants from the Indian sub continent to the UK; we are the same colour as Spaniards and worship the same God.

For me, it's all about balance, what's wrong with having Brit and Spanish friends, watching Spanish and Brit TV? We have Spanish friends here in UK that have embraced UK living, but they still have their "quedadas", they still go back home often etc, none that I know try to delete Spain from their life, or deny they are Spanish.

Couldn't have put it better. I would add most of them don't actually speak Spanish very well. They are smug and boast to other Brits who don't speak any Spanish. They walk along the pueblo smiling and saying "buenas" to any Spaniard whilst studiously ignoring anyone who looks like a Brit. They often refer to "their Spanish friends" but don't actually have any, just aquaintances. If anything bad happens to an expat it's always there own fault.

How True, when the Overseas ( pretends its Iceland ) branch in Albufeira fell foul of the trading rules in Portugal and was closed until it conformed there were cries from some of the Brit expats and letters to the local press that " they" should leave " our " shop alone, it was not mean.t for the locals.

During one of the main religious fiestas in Torrevieja a hundred expats, they call them Costaleros, dressed in Spanish outfits, carry a heavy religious statue through the streets.

HBG said this in another thread. Unless they are practicing Catholics I would regard this as plastic Spaniards. Most will either be atheists or lapsed Christians. If I were a local and took my religion seriously I would feel offended.

"If" is the keyword, I'm sure there are some, you probably know some, but I've never met anyone that has taken Spanish nationality. I've asked the question here before, how many have, or intend to when qualified, take Spanish nationality. The reply has always been a deafening silence. For some reason, despite their apparent dislike of UK, they still like to hang onto the Brit passport. Just in case?

we qualify in a few weeks

my older daughter will I'm certain do so - either with my signature before her 18th birthday next year, or without it then

my other daughter & I are seriously considering it

it's not that we especially dislike the UK - more that we really don't have any strong ties there (some family we never see & rarely have contact with) any more & can't think of any reason to NOT take Spanish nationality

our feet are very firmly planted here

If I felt like that I would do it. One advantage is that they cannot kick you out and you never know what is around the corner.

precisely

teachers at my daughters' school tell me that my elder daughter is more 'Jáviensa' than any of the kids they know who were born here - some new teachers don't even realise that she's not Spanish until they put her together with her name!!

one new teacher even asked the class why 'the English girl' hadn't turned up for 2 weeks....

It's good to see your family considering it, the son of some friends of ours has just moved from Granada University to Córdoba University and he's considering it. But these are young people that have mainly been raised in Spain, it would seem natural for them as Spain has been where they have spent their formative years, they feel more at "home" there than UK. I'm sure your daughters, like our friend's son could pass for Spanish without any problems, they ain't plastic Brits!
