Default Weather in Galicia

As my better half (she who speaks thunder) and I continue with our research we have a question which we hope some people who already live in and have hands on experience of Galicia will be able to answer.

We have read much about the extremely high levels of rainfall in Galicia but would like to know if this is indicative of the whole of the Galician region, or is it more in the mountainous regions, costal regions etc. We lived in Wales for several years and rain in itself is not a problem for us, but if some of the stuff we have read which indicates that it rains very heavily for over 1/3rd of the year this may be different (even Wales was not that bad) as it is no fun for people llama trekking in the pouring rain.

We also understand that this year may not have been the best year in which to guage normal weather conditions as we had rain for over 200 days last year and where we live in France it was the wettest year in recorded history here.

We had our first prolonged rain for the winter which lasted for about two weeks and ended yesterday. Today it has been 20degrees and warm, although very windy. It does not seem to make much difference whether you on top of a mountain or along the coast, it rains the same amount.

Mike you have to appreciate the size of Galicia and the variety of the land which also influences the weather.
The city of Ourense, for instance is the hottest place in the whole of Spain several times a year. We live just 20 mins drive away and we do not get that sort of heat.
In general you will find the coast the wettest, especially the Costa Morte and Rias Altas. The Rias Baixas is usually drier. Inland, near the border with Castilla Y Leon the mountains have a far bit of snow in a normal winter. We have a ski station only ¾ hours drive away. the only snow we have seen has lasted about 4 hours, and we are at about 450metres above sea level. The town of Lalin is always the coldest spot in Galicia, no matter what time of year.Unlike Battlezone we have had very little rain this winter. It is just too dry, so don’t fret Mitzyboy all may come good, he says fingers crossed.
Today the temp reached about 20 degrees and the Bees and butterflies were out in force. At the moment the Wisteria is opening which is much earlier than normal. It does get chilly here at nights though.
Now if you really do not want to see rain and require heat then do not think about moving to anywhere along the Northern part of Spain. It is not green for nothing.

Thanks again for the comprehensive and informative replies which all go to help in our decision making process.

Cold weather does not bother us (it normally goes down to -24 degs here in winter) and neither does the rain (providing it is not excessive!!!) or snow as the llamas can cope and work easily with these conditions, but very hot summers is something we would avoid like the plague. I always believe that hot weather may be good for a short holiday and some sunbathing but not if you have to work in it. It will also be nice to be able to visit a beach and see the sea again (being so far inland here I miss the sea).

We are counting down the days as we make our move over to start house hunting in 5 weeks time. Just hate all the packing yet again though….

5 weeks is not so long. We are well inland but the nearest coast is about 2-3 hours away near Vigo. we also have a river beach near us plus we know where there are free hot springs less than half an hour away.

Note to all of you on this forum No we are not going to tell you lot before you move here either!

It does get hot here at times, but too see how hot then maybe another visit in August you can also judge your what you likely clientèle will be too.

An update on the weather here at the moment.
It is so dry and since yesterday (3rd) until Sunday 6th April. Places like Ourense will have highs of around 29 degrees. On the northern coast they say it will be sunny but quite mild; temps around 17 down to 11 degs.
Lucky we live inland!
