For 17 years we had the sweetest most gentle yellow Lab who mothered our 3 kids when they were very young and would let them sit on her and lean on her when they were experimentng with walking. She could hold the most delicate things in her mouth without breakage.
We knew a Surgeon Lt Cmdr at the local Royal Marine Reserve unit who had a classic black working breed lab (important since show labs are often inbred and have bad hips which can be painful in later life). They were devoted companions. One day the lab tore a great chunk out of the Docs face! He had her put down with regret and could only guess what had happened but thought it most likely that the dog was in great pain perhaps a toothache. You just never know very young chldren should never be left alone with any breed of dog We have a Golden Retriever, the most gentle, well mannered dog I have ever known. Now she is getting old and maybe a bit grumpy, quite a few aches and pains, just touch her by mistake on the wrong spot and woosh, she will bite like a croc. |

With regard to ppl.starving, maybe another subject for another thread. However I think the amount of food wasted from both households and restaurants is a crime, when I think of others in the world with nothing. Being a wartime bairn in not the richest of households I was brought up to look on food as a very very precious thing and maybe still do. So I find it somewhat shocking at the huge quantities wasted in todays western world. |

My 50kg dog's food bill comes to about AUS$20 a week, and he is fed with "human food" that I buy and cook for him. It's much less than some big dog owners told me they spend on "dog food". |

Look. I'm no expert, just talking from personal experience
Staffordshire bull terriers are often placed in the same pidgeon hole as Rotttweilers. My sister has had three of them. She has trained them properly and showered them with love and affection. I have to say each dog has been like a little human. Absolutely fantastic dogs, and the kids throw themselves on top of them, no problem. Never ever an aggressive move. You bring kids up badly they behave badly. You treat and train dogs badly, they are bad dogs and not to be trusted. So its not the dog that's the problem, its the way they are bought up imho |

Banus, san ped, marbella area. Thanks. ps I know there are lots of unwanted dogs around but this is the breed I want.

Well poshnbecks that was very interesting indeed. For me though they are still a scary dog. A friend has had two cats ripped to death by a dog kept next door as a guard dog. I would rather risk a burglary than keep a dog like that.
A neighbour had 12 dangerous dogs like that which killed several local cats and other dogs, Ive shot five of of the dogs and he hasnt mentioned it to me ,obviously aware but dose not care, they also savaged a neighbours hand which resulted in stitches, the neighbour was top scared to go to the police in case of repercussions, bloody gitanos!!! Wonder if your doggy might give me an invite to join him for dinner one day.:D |
Re: Wanted: Rottweiler Dog
chicken liver is high in uric acid, which is bad for the dog and can lead to urinary tract infections and other kidney diseases..:(

Totally true, I used to breed and show Irish Setters, and when people were buying a puppy from us and asked about how they would develop, always told them that when the dog was 2 they would have the sort of dog they deserved. This is because, no matter how gentle the breed, if you treat it badly as a puppy and let it get it's own wy, then you build into it habits that are almost impossible to get rid of. Personally I would NEVER leave a child with any dog, children love to pull a dogs tail and ears, try to get on their backs, loads of dogs will take that, but some will be unhappy, and may turn on the chld. I've know loads of examples of most breeds at shows etc, andhere are good and bad ones in any breed, but where a dogs original purpose was guarding, then you will nEVER train that out completely, same goes for terriers, their original job was catching and killing rats etc, and they are designed for that, once they get hold they just can't let go as their jaws lock and have to be forced open.
Our Westie got a hedgehog the other night and wouldn´t let go until I shook him really hard bruising my hand in the process. I have also seen him kill a rat in front of us. Again he is really gentle but I would never leave him alone with a child. |
