I'll take the Spanish governments publications over the British Embassy every time.

The extension is only there to help the DGT cope with the amount of people who registered and now can't get appointments (just like the TIE backlog for new applicants)
I still know a couple of people who did nothing about and are now panicking (one of them has been here 10 years and only did his residence in January) Still have his UK drivers licence but seems to think the IDP he got last time he was in the Uk (4 years ago) covers him.

Exact figures are hard to come by but I've seen it suggested that there could be many thousands in Spain who have still done nothing.
If an IDP were required in Spain, which it isn't, it would be the 1949 which has a life of just 12 months from date of issue which will be clearly written on it so it sounds like your man may be illiterate as well as stupid!
Maybe so but it also talks about using a DVLA 'letter of entitlement' to exchange a lost, stolen, or expired UK licence for a Spanish one, oh that it were that easy!
British Embassy webinars can be woolly affairs often littered with, I think, I believe, it may, it should etc. rather than cast iron info.

I thought this forum was to provide support to other expats? Calling people "stupid" or "illiterate" is helpful to no-one. Please, please think twice before posting aggresive responses. Life's hard enough as it is.

I referred to anonymous and unknown 3rd party as 'illiterate as well as stupid' and given what was posted about him, and the position it's put him in, I see no reason to apologise for it.
Some people do not deserve support!
