Under the radar? Be afraid, (some) be VERY afraid!
Initially aimed at criminals and those with something to have run away from the suggested spot checks in popular Brit watering holes should keep more than a few afraid and awake at night, 500 can only represent the tip of a very big iceberg!

Yes, I saw that article - good news no? Get rid of the scammers and criminals.

Re: Under the radar? Be afraid, (some) be VERY afraid!
And send them back home ? NO, KEEP THEM IN ESPANA !

Re: Under the radar? Be afraid, (some) be VERY afraid!
They will probally cross into portugal and join our overstayers on the algarve who think they are untouchable
|
Re: Under the radar? Be afraid, (some) be VERY afraid!
The best thing about this is that these people brought it on themselves. No-one forced them to live illegally. Going the legal route used to be easy in comparison with how it is nowadays. No sympathy from me.

Re: Under the radar? Be afraid, (some) be VERY afraid!
I knew several people on the urbanisation we lived on who were 'under the radar' they were still paying taxes in the UK, still registered with their GP and still getting their prescriptions from the UK. Their comments were that, well it doesn't matter, we're not hurting anyone. The people whose house we bought, moved to France, but didn't do it fully legally, so we had all sorts of problems when we went to sign on the padron, and had the police visiting to check the other people were not living there. We did register on the padron and get residencia, cost us €6000 when we sold, we had no proof they had paid the property taxes when they bought, we did manage to trace them and gave details to the gestor who was dealing for us. No idea whether he got the money back from the banks as he disappeared with no forwarding address a few months later. We assume he got the money and appropriated it for his own use.

Re: Under the radar? Be afraid, (some) be VERY afraid!
Such people believe they are not harming anyone yet often sit complaining about the plight of illegal immigrants flooding the UK and using the services "we Brits" have paid for. Ignoring the fact that for them it's "pot kettle black". When they are found out they will of course use that non legal defence " We are just pensioners we didn't know the rules" yeh right.

I'm sure we all know at least one or a few, I know I do.

Re: Under the radar? Be afraid, (some) be VERY afraid!
It seems like this will be a joint operation with the British police working with the Spanish. They probably know who they are where they live already. It’s worked in favour for the UK as they have been easier able to drive out the Albanian Mafia that run the drug trade in UK. Also the the Lithuanians that were heavily involved with drug importation in the UK.

Re: Under the radar? Be afraid, (some) be VERY afraid!
I can’t see the Spanish going that gung ho on potential British overstayers expecially when Costa del sol is home to the Russian mafia , the Algerian and morrocan mafia and some of the most powerful gypsy families in Europe.it actually quite laughable when you compare the traditional British crook on the run in comparison lol.

Get real! This people cannot earn an honest living and operate in the underworld and will make money by any illegal means possible, in order to survive! They lack any for of ethics and would rob you tomorrow given half a chance. Please remove the rose-tinted glasses… |

That would make it more likely that they'll go after a British pensioner illegal immigrant. They'll be an easy target and a quick tick in the box, unlike a mafia member.
The flip side of Brexit is any British citizen who is now in Spain is now and has either overstayed their welcome or here illegally, should depart proto, before they get the heave ho! |
Re: Under the radar? Be afraid, (some) be VERY afraid!
That article gives the impression that they are only after criminals, hence the 500 figure. However they already know how to find them and deal with them, but they would need training a bit if it was the overstayers and unregistered that they were after.
I hope they do try and get rid of the illegals as well as the criminals, but I’m not going to get my hopes up. They have never done anything about the thousands of illegal Brit vehicles in Spain. Any white van with a UK plate is 99.9% likely to be illegal but they still get away with it. Also, any UK plated car in Spain after April 1st is likely to be owned by an overstayer or illegal. |
Re: Under the radar? Be afraid, (some) be VERY afraid!
I totally agree Fred and like you I do hope they do something about them. I'm sure it will be much easier now and very difficult for those that haven't bothered to legalise their position. There has been ample opportunity to do that.

Although it’s not just criminals the Spanish police will be after, it will be all British nationals that haven’t applied or obtain residency to which the Spanish police force expects to be at least 500 persons.Failure to return to the UK will see offenders fined heavily, deported with likelihood bans on returning to EU destinations. |
Re: Under the radar? Be afraid, (some) be VERY afraid!
I know it says that, but if you are talking about Brits under the radar, 50000 would be a more realistic figure.

OK, worked it out, call all British illegals 'Zebedee' of MAGIC ROUNDABOUT fame...
Keeps it simple... |

That might have been true in the past but until now they've had little incentive. Certainly any found being driven, I wouldn't relish the idea of being one roadside check away from arrest, detention, and deportation. |

And - if it's true - why wasn't it possible to have done so while we were still a member of the EU? Albania isn't even an EU member state. |

For the life of me I cannot even understand why someone who had left the UK to start a new life in Spain, would vote for Brexit.
Appears to be a complete contradiction to me... I like the rest of all you who have left the UK and taken up residency here in Spain, can still vote in UK referenda and elections, FOR 15 YEARS, after we left! |

Many of those in Spain who voted Leave are likely some of the same ones who are illegal migrants 'under the radar' in Spain. Ironic, if that's the case... |

I would imagine there are a lot of UK nationals like me who are fortunate enough to have Irish passports. As for the future, I think you will see a very different type of UK national moving to Spain ie wealthy, professional people. |

They are going to scrap the time limit on voting which is 15 years, so it becomes indefinite entitlement to vote, not scrap the right to vote entirely. |

Just guessing here but I'd say it's possibly because they think more of the types who'd exercise the option would be Conservative voters. Wouldn't be surprised if they've done some homework on that score. They're also proposing to introduce obligatory in-person voter photo id on some spurious excuse about voter fraud, which is at such vanishingly low levels as to be of no concern whatsoever and therefore fairly obviously has an ulterior motive, which isn't too difficult to guess at given who is more likely to already possess acceptable photo id than not. |

Re: Under the radar? Be afraid, (some) be VERY afraid!
So there will be no mass deportations after all according to the Spanish government. Well find out this week what will happen to expired British. Probably nothing at all lol
|
Re: Under the radar? Be afraid, (some) be VERY afraid!
Yes, I saw the Spanish government looking to play it down.
