Re: UK Groceries
I was tasked with some shopping this morning, went to Mercadona and just happened to walk past their display of chocolate.
Somehow a bar of Ritter Sport peppermint chocolate (€0.89) just happened to fall off the shelf and into the trolley  but the empty wrapper has been thrown out so no temptation (anymore) :p ` |

If at any given moment you want a bit of English cheddar and have the means and desire to pay for it, why would you conform with Spanish cheese, no matter how great the variety is?
By the same token why would a Spaniard in the UK conform with a bit of streaky bacon, when they really would like a nice bit of the real McCoy tocino? Subject to availability. I really don´t get the "try something new and forget the old" school of thought. Try the new and keep up with the old, the best way to go. Try new things by all means, but if you fancy something from way back home, go for it. When I go back to England the first thing I have is cheddar cheese on toast with Colemans mustard. Exotic and delicious, I enjoy it much more because I only have it once a year! |

OK, Plaza de Torros time on this one.
Bread. Why did the art of baking never cross the Pyrenees ? Maybe they just skipped Catalonia and headed straight for Andalucia! Though I think Galicia is famous for its loaves as well? I went to a food fair in Sevilla where there was a stall selling pan gallego, very tempting! |

You don't have to "forget the old", of course not! But some people never actually try the new, because they are suspicious of "foreign" food or convinced it won't be as good.

Actually I think that British people are better than most at trying foreign foods probably because foreign food is ubiquitous in the UK. I would lay odds that most food eaten out in the UK is 'foreign' (Indian, Thai, Chinese and so on) rather than native British.
But that's not the fault of the food itself, it's the fault of the people preparing it. If you use Spanish ingredients and cook them in the way you like, you can eat very well. PS I can't believe anyone would eat cheese-on-toast without mustard! It would be like a boiled egg without salt! |

Re: UK Groceries
"Are you serious? I found the bread to be awful in Barcelona,"
I live in Italy where the bread is rather dreadful so I make a lot of my own because it stays fresh longer than a few hours and using up yesterday's bakery bought stale bread to make bruschetti to save waste gets wearisome. Last year we did a short trip to Barcelona and coming back home I filled my carry on luggage with 7 huge baguettes-they were glorious! I prefer Spanish food to Italian it's tastier and more varied-but still happy we chose Italy to live in-food's not that important really is it? |

Re: UK Groceries
at the height of last summer I had Cheese on Toast with nothing on........
but the BH came out on the patio and told me to get dressed  |
Re: UK Groceries
Now look here:frown:
The only thing to have with a Cheddar cheese sandwich is Branston Pickle. HP sauce is also allowed with melted cheese on toast.` Anything else is just... wrong. |

Not sure about the "brown ale" though. Is that Guinness? Wouldn't it make the toast soggy? |

Not sure about the "brown ale" though. Is that Guinness? Wouldn't it make the toast soggy? Did you not read the recipe? I saw it on Ade in Britain today but could not find his recipe. Basically you put some Cheese ( Double Gloucester ) in a pan smear it with mustard pour on some ale, stick it in the oven for 10 minutes. It then forms a gloopy mess, pour it on toast Simples. A variant of Welsh rarebit ??? |
