I do wonder where the new jobs are going to come from - I suspect all the jobs will be taken by Asia in the near future. It's alleged that France and Germany are coming out of recession, but I expect their unemployment isn't coming down. As for the UK, there's supposed to be around 8 or 9 million without work if you count all those on IB or other benefits. Not made any better by this week''s job losses - Lloyds (600 Aylesbury), BAE 400, Borders closing down, Threshers shops closing (2130 jobs). I personally have been out of work since February, made worse by the fact I'm not eligible for any Jobseeker Allowance (although my partner claims tax credit). I've made a decision this week to concentrate on finding work in Madrid - it can hardly be worse than what I've endured in the UK so far this year. Trouble is, it's made harder if you're not physically there, so I may not have any luck in that direction either. Still at least I can spend the cold winter days posting on here!

Wow....that's pretty bad. But that's what happens when you're too dumb to look into the future, of course we all know the politicians were only interested in short-term gain without looking at the long-term consequences

Are things picking up in the States yet? It seems to be constant bad news here in the UK and in Spain as regards job losses (although the stock exchange is doing well)

It's only a matter of perseverence and a bit of luck. We moved to Madrid in the middle of December last year and 2 weeks later my OH had a full time job which admitedly is easyer for someone who's Spanish. This gave me time to look for the job I wanted rather than just look for "a job". If you don't care what you do there's always something on offer and it's a case of walking everywhere with your C.V. BurgerKing, Telepizza, etc. are always looking for people. I made the decision to return to the industry I knew and was good at but made the mistake of sending emails to all the companies in my chosen trade which in hindsight wasn't a very proffesional thing to do, it was only by look that probably one of the only companies in the trade that I didn't send a C.V. to found my details on a website, emailed my asking for my full C.V. rang me an hour later asking me if I could go for an interview that afternoon and 1 month later I started working there. It's going to take time to find work but if you're not fussy there is work out there.

There are thousands of jobs in UK too if you are prepared to do anything, there are over 8,000 alone in the Health Service, but you can bet your life they are grim, poorly paid jobs, or they'd have been snapped up long ago. Statistically, you still have a much better chance of a job in UK, and even with minimum wage, will be more than Spain. Reading in another forum, a lady that has returned to UK from Spain, unable to get any work, has dropped straight into a job in M&S, so maybe she was like you. Not sure what your skill is that seems to be so highly valued in Spain and not in UK.

It's the language, in the UK all you have to do is speak English, in Spain, Spanish, which is what many of the non Spanish job hunters have a problem with. If you need to work in a country with a language different from your own, then fluency is essential if you are not to be very limited in your choice.

Good to hear that Madrid's still one of the best places in Europe to find work - it corresponds with my own previous experience (obviously it's a lot harder, if not impossible in other parts of Spain). However I'm not in a position to fork out on accommodation without the promise of a job, so have to apply for roles from the UK, which makes things a lot, lot harder. People tell me I should try and get a job in the Middle East, but after the latest news from Dubai, I do wonder! I really fear (and hope I'm wrong) that things are going to get really bad now in the UK. There are big cuts looming in places like the NHS and local government, and lot of private firms are now cutting back and/or going bust. Looks bad all around!
