Trip to Tangier

Trip to Tangier
I originally posted this in the Ayamonte Club but thought I would give it a wider airing.
I was thinking of taking a trip to Tangier - staying a couple of nights. Has anyone done this and can offer a few tips?
We thought that we would drive to Tarifa, leave the car and take the ferry across staying a couple of nights.•where to park in Tarifa? Is it safe or should we look for secure parking.
•Is it feasible to drive to Tarifa (from Ayamonte) and take the ferry the same day or should we think of an overnight in Tarifa to maximise time in Tangier
•Any recommendations for hotels in Tangier? Riad vs modern hotel?
•What is there to do/see in Tangier?
•Is it worth organising a guide/tour?
•Any other tips/warnings/advice
Many thanks for any thoughts.

Re: Trip to Tangier
Frankly Tangiers is a bit of a dump and not representative of the real Morocco.
It,s a good place as a base and easy to get to but do organize some trips out of the place. You can do a day trip up into the Rif mountains to Chefchaouen which is well worth a visit.
If you want to see a proper Moroccan city get a trip just up the coast to Tetouan - that is much more representative of the country and the souk is very interesting.
Hotels? If you can afford it try the El Minzah in the centre of Tangiers. Churchill said it was his favorite hotel anywhere. We spent Xmas there one year and he was right!
Otherwise there are lots of modern hotels on the seafront.

Re: Trip to Tangier
Didn't Churchill stay at the Rif hotel on the seafront?
I stayed there some years ago, a large place steeped in the past, with massive, marbled rooms overlooking a giant beach with a railway line running down the middle of it and kids playing 50 a-side football.
It's an interesting and dangerous place, the Cafe de Paris is in the middle of it, but the walk there and back again will confront you with hundreds of beggars, not friendly ones.
But if you're young and fit and adventurous, come out of the Rif in the evening, turn right and head for the underground disco about 200 yards away.
It will blow your mind.
